Description: CIPE supports the positive role that the private sector can play in fragile and conflict-affected states, as well as environments rife with corruption. This internship provides an opportunity to explore the role of the private sector in emerging democracies with attention to anti-corruption and conflict/post-conflict initiatives. Specifically, the intern will support two separate CIPE staff working groups: the Conflict and Anti-Corruption/Value Chains Task Forces. Undergraduate (rising junior or above preferred), graduate, or law students demonstrating interest in the positive role that the private sector can play in fragile and conflict-affected states are encouraged to apply.

Reports to: Anti-Corruption/Value Chains Task Force and Conflict Task Force Leaders

Key Areas of Responsibility:

• Research and write blogs on topics related to the role of the private sector in conflict and post-conflict affected areas and fragile states, private sector-led anti-corruption initiatives, and compliance in global value chains.
• Compile bi-monthly briefs for both task forces including relevant news, articles, and upcoming events in Washington, D.C.
• Attend events of interest in the Washington, D.C. areas.
• Assist with logistics of events organized by CIPE’s Conflict or Value Chains Task Forces.
• Conduct short-term research projects to provide background information on various issues and support for program research. Update and maintain resource materials for the team listservs and internal database. Help co-create social media campaigns to raise awareness for these themes.

The Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) program is a peer-to-peer academic coaching program, in which trained PAL coaches assist UMD students in using effective learning techniques to improve study skills and encourage their growth as learners.

Students engage in a semester-long, peer mentor training program, and are able to volunteer (for a small stipend), or receive 1 or 3 upper-level credits. PAL coaches also have the opportunity to become a certified mentor by the Learning Assistance Service or the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA).

The Washington office of Senator Amy Klobuchar is currently accepting internship applications for the 2017 spring session. An internship with the Senator’s office is a terrific chance for students to gain first-hand experience with both the legislative process and constituent services in the United States Senate.

Washington interns assist the office in a variety of legislative and administrative capacities. Interns support legislative staff by conducting policy research, attending briefings, and preparing for hearings. They are also asked to give tours of the U.S. Capitol to constituents and assist with constituent correspondence by letter, email, and phone. During your time in the office, you will learn your way around Capitol Hill and become familiar with the daily operations of a Senate office.

The spring internship runs from January to May and is available both part time and full time. If you will be attending classes while you are here we ask that you note that on your internship application, as well as what days and times you are available to work. The Federal government has become the employer of choice as it represents an element of stability in an ever-changing workplace. The application process continues to evolve as do the methodologies involved. We will examine the USAJOBS website and dissect an announcement and online questionnaire. In doing so, we will look for keywords and a methodology will be demonstrated to highlight keywords for inclusion in the application. Additionally, federal jargon will be translated into real, usable terms so that it is easier to understand the process and qualifications involved. Strategies will be shared as to how to best format the federal résumé and how it differs from those that are acceptable in the private sector. Real Estate Development Minor

Undergraduates interested in careers relating to real estate and the built environment—such as architecture, business, construction management, civil engineering, historic preservation, local government, non-profit housing, public-private partnerships, landscape architecture, urban planning or related entrepreneurial ventures—can now complete a minor in real estate development.

The courses and minor are designed to provide students with an introduction to sustainable development while giving them a working knowledge of the real estate industry. They include a focus on the development process; the basics of real estate finance; urban planning and design; and the unique roles of government and the private sector.

Both the courses and minor will be open to all UMD undergraduates with a GPA of 2.0 or above, who are enrolled in any major and have completed ARCH 271/RDEV 250 with a C- or better, and can be a good stepping stone to more advanced graduate work. Students completing the minor will have a head start in pursuing a Masters of Real Estate Development at UMD: 9 credits for the Master’s will already be satisfied.

Boren Scholarship for Study Abroad

The Boren Scholarship is aimed at undergraduates (US citizens) who want to study abroad for one or two semesters (preferably) in 2017-18 in non-traditional regions and countries, and who are interested in learning the languages of those areas. Maryland has ranked # 1 in the nation in Boren Scholarships awarded for the past 5 years!!!

For four decades, the Environmental Law Institute (ELI) has played a pivotal role in shaping the fields of environmental law, policy, and management, both domestically and internationally. For more information on the Institute, visit www.eli.org.

ELI seeks individuals to support the research and publications departments of the Institute. Interns work directly with staff attorneys, editors, scientists, and economists on a variety of projects. Substantive areas of focus include: land use policy, public participation in environmental regulation, biodiversity, air quality, public health, hazardous waste and brownfields, wetlands and watershed policy, international environmental policy, armed conflict and the environment, environmental management systems, and environmental enforcement.

Interns conduct library and internet research, attend and report on outside events, analyze, edit, and synthesize scholarly material, assist with preparation for environmental training courses, and perform various administrative tasks. ELI integrates interns into the day-to-day operations of the Institute, and interns are encouraged to attend ELI policy events and meetings.

Positions are available throughout the academic year (minimum 15 hours/week) and during the summer (full-time). Candidates should possess superior research, writing, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as a strong desire to gain knowledge of the environmental field. A strong academic background is required, but specific environmental experience is not mandatory. Candidates must have completed their freshman year of college. Compensation is not available, but a transportation stipend is provided.

2017 Institute for Defense Analyses Summer Associate Program

The IDA Summer Associate Program provides students unique opportunity to use their quantitative and analytic skills to work on challenging real-world national security issues. The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a not-for-profit corporation that operates Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs).

Two of these FFRDCs are accepting Summer Associates.

Staff at the IDA Systems and Analyses Center (SAC) provide objective analyses of national security issues, particularly those requiring scientific and technical expertise, and conduct related research on other national challenges. The Studies and Analyses Center, located in Alexandria, Virginia, is comprised of eight research divisions:

Now in it’s third year, the University Challenge is open for the Fall 2016 semester. The competition gives students, at both the undergraduate and graduate level, the chance to compete against other students from top schools worldwide, outperform industry experts and contend for prizes — in Wall Street's first industry playoff competition.

This contest is a great opportunity for students to practice investment analysis in a competitive, real-time environment. We want to give college students a chance to learn more about the stock market while they compete for amazing prizes, including an internship opportunity with Vetr. The Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities (WRP) is a recruitment and referral program that connects public and private sector employers nationwide with highly motivated postsecondary students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through paid summer or permanent jobs.

The WRP provides students with disabilities in all fields of study the opportunity to market their abilities to a wide variety of potential employers across the United States, sharpen their interviewing skills during a required one-on-one meeting with a WRP recruiter, and gain valuable skills, experience, and contacts on the job.

Applicants for the program must:

• have a disability AND
• be a U.S. citizen AND
• be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education on a substantially full-time basis (unless the severity of the disability precludes the student from taking a substantially full-time load) to seek a degree OR
• be enrolled in such an institution as a degree-seeking student taking less than a substantially full-time load in the enrollment period immediately prior to graduation OR
• have graduated from such an institution within the past year.

Spring 2017 Economic Policy Internship, Dept. of Treasury - Apply by Nov. 10th!

The Office of Economic Policy, U.S. Treasury Department is currently looking for college students interested in Economics, Finance, or Public Policy for our Spring 2017 internship session. Our program runs year round with three sessions: January through May, May through August, and September through December. Our program is about substance. Interns are generally assigned a long-term research project as well as smaller projects. They are also expected to attend Congressional Hearings and think tank lectures and presentations and summarize these events for the Assistant Secretary and other senior level economists. Candidates should have strong writing skills, be able to work independently, be well organized and highly motivated. Interns are expected to work between 32 and 40 hours a week. There is some flexibility in the work hours if you are taking classes while in D.C. Our intern positions are unpaid. We do provide a subway subsidy to help defray commuting expenses.

Research Associate Position with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City - Apply by Nov. 30th!

The Economic Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City is recruiting for the position of Research Associate.

Key Activities Include:

• Assisting Ph.D. economists on academic research projects and monetary policy briefings.
• Gathering and analyzing data, programming economic models, and preparing charts for presentations on economic and financial conditions.
• More experienced Research Associates participate in econometric or theoretical research, write for Bank publications, and deliver speeches to civic and educational groups.

These are excellent positions for someone considering a Ph.D. in economics. Research Associates develop technical skills and are exposed to a broad range of economic research topics. Most Research Associates stay with the department for two to three years, at which point many return to graduate school. In recent years, Research Associates have gone on to Ph.D. programs at Boston College, New York University, Stanford University, University of Chicago, University of Michigan and University of Minnesota.

Required Education and Skills:

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in economics or a closely related field, such as statistics, computer science, or mathematics.
• Coursework or experience in econometrics, math, statistics, statistical software packages, and macroeconomic modeling is highly desirable.
• Strong academic record.
• High proficiency with personal computers and spreadsheet software.
• Excellent communication skills.

Education Abroad has extended the deadline for select winter & spring break programs to October 10th!

One of the programs is UMD-Spring Break: Japan: Disaster Recovery (BSST)

Through meetings and activities with government officials, non-profit workers, students, educators, and small business owners in Tokyo, Sendai, Kesennuma, and elsewhere in the Tohoku region, University of Maryland students will learn how Japan’s experiences of disaster—both natural and man-made—have shaped society and government policy. Students will develop broad knowledge of global disaster risk reduction, management, and recovery; and will also develop deep knowledge of Japan’s March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster. Students will find that there are often no easy answers when it comes to disaster, but will finish the program equipped with foundational knowledge and skills to further explore the roles that they might play in disaster risk reduction, management, and recovery within their chosen academic or professional fields.

Students in this program participate in 2 weeks of pre-departure online and in-person coursework in the U.S.; 1 week of study and travel in Japan during spring break; and 2 additional weeks of U.S.-based online and in-person coursework, culminating in a Maryland-based service project designed by the students in order to share and apply in their own community what they have learned in Japan.

Students of all majors and all years are encouraged to apply: disaster affects all sectors of society, and students of all backgrounds can benefit from—and contribute to—this program. Regardless of your major, this program will give you valuable experience interacting with individuals from different cultures in an international setting, learning first-hand how to address real world issues and develop potential solutions.

As you prepare to embark on your next journey after graduating from the University of Maryland, what reflections would you share with your fellow graduates?

Each year the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences selects one student to deliver a 4-5 minute speech at the commencement ceremony. The theme of the speech is entirely up to you but must speak to all graduates from the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.

The selected student speaker will get to deliver his/her message to the 2,000 students, faculty, and guests at the BSOS Commencement Ceremony. The student speaker will play a prominent role in the procession into the Xfinity Center. During the BSOS Commencement Ceremony, the student speaker will get to sit on stage with the Dean Gregory Ball and will receive reserved special seating for family and guests.

Eligibility

• Completed at least 60 credits at the University of Maryland, College Park
• A GPA of 3.50 or better
• Graduated in Summer or Fall 2016

Washington Nationals Baseball Operations 2017 Season Internship

Contribute to Washington Nationals Baseball Operations for the 2017 season as one of our highly valued interns. We’re looking for dynamic individuals who can contribute to our front office in Washington, DC by specializing in work related to Major League Operations. This internship is for the 2017 season and typically spans from Opening Day to November 1st. Decisions regarding the position will not be made until the Fall and Winter of 2016 and applicants being considered should not expect to be contacted before the end of the 2016 baseball season.

The Major League Operations internship includes assisting the Baseball Operations Department with day-to-day assignments along with long term projects centered on roster management, salary arbitration, transactions, and the economics of baseball. Highly advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills are strongly preferred, as are a degree in economics, statistics, or mathematics, work experience in finance or consulting, and a demonstrated interest and understanding of publicly available sabermetrics research and the economics of baseball.
