Bright Futures Scholarship for Unpaid Summer Internships

Deadline to Apply Extended: Friday, May 14, 2021

The Bright Futures Initiative awards students with need-based scholarships ranging from $100-$1,000 to help offset expenses incurred during unpaid internships. Scholarships are generously funded by the Eisen Family, the University Career Center & The President’s Promise, and individual donors through Maryland Giving Day.

If you are an undergraduate student who has secured an unpaid summer 2021 internship with a non-profit organization or government office, you are eligible to apply. Additional eligibility details are provided below.

Eligible Candidates
All registered University of Maryland, College Park undergraduate students returning to campus for the fall 2021 semester, who have an unpaid internship for summer 2021, are eligible to apply. Graduating seniors are not eligible. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors graduating in December. Preference will also be given to those who have not previously received this scholarship.

Diversity in Government Internship Program with the United States Tax Court

The United States Tax Court Diversity in Government Internship Program (DiG Tax) will be virtual this summer and provide significant exposure to the inner workings of the U.S. Tax Court, a federal court located in Washington, D.C. DiG Tax interns will observe judges and lawyers; attend virtual trials, meetings, and presentations; and assist on projects with departments throughout the Court, including Case Services, Facilities, Finance, Human Resources, Library, Information Technology, and Public Affairs.

Prospective DiG Tax interns should demonstrate academic achievement; exhibit qualities such as strong character and self-sufficiency under challenging circumstances; and be self-directed and able to work with limited supervision.

Additionally, applicants must:
  1. Be a U.S. citizen or national;
  2. Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (visit https://www.ed.gov/accreditation to verify your school and/or program of study);
  3. Have and maintain a 3.0 GPA or better;
  4. Have an interest in working with the federal government; and
  5. Be able to work 40 hours per week during the summer internship.

Summer 2021 Research and Communications Internship: Korea Economic Institute of America

KEI is an established public policy institute focused on the Korean peninsula and the U.S.-Korea relationship. KEI is currently seeking graduate students and exceptional undergraduate students with a clear interest in the U.S.-Korea bilateral issues for its Spring 2021 intern class. Interns will develop a deeper understanding of the major policies concerning the economic, political, and security aspects of U.S.-Korea relations. Apply today for BSOS Summer/Fall 2021 Undergraduate Experience Funds!

 


These funds assist undergraduate BSOS majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom, such as unpaid internships, research, service-learning, and professional or academic virtual conferences. The funds are intended to help offset expenses related to such activities including, but not limited to;
  • pandemic conscious travel/transportation expenses
  • pandemic related relocation expenses
  • professional attire
  • opportunity costs, (i.e. the need to give up a part-time paid job in order to take an unpaid internship.)
  • software/technology, material needs, not provided by employer/University, but essential to the experience.
  • conference fees

If you are a BSOS student with financial need that is preventing you from taking advantage of an unpaid opportunity, you are encouraged to apply for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds.

This application will close on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 by 5 PM or when funding for Summer/Fall 2021 experiences has been exhausted.

GIS Minor now enrolling!

The Geospatial Information Science minor is now enrolling! Students minoring in Geospatial Information Science (GIS) gain the technical skills needed to acquire, manage, and analyze large amounts of geospatial data. The curriculum will provide students with the necessary background to use GIS in various fields such as environmental monitoring, disaster assessments, military analysis and intelligence, social justice, cartography, and other related fields.

Job Description

The PCAOB has a paid internship position for summer 2021 for an Intern – Funding Operations reporting to the Senior Manager, Funding Operations in the Office of Finance at its Washington, DC office. The position will support the various processes required to prepare for, assess, and collect the issuer accounting support fees (“ASF”), broker-dealer ASFs, and registrant annual fees (collectively, “the fees”) timely and accurately each year in coordination with Funding Operations team members. This position requires a proactive person who thrives in a multi-faceted professional environment and works professionally with others. The internship is expected to start in May 2021 and continue through September 2021, and the estimated time per week will vary between 20-40 hours.

Paid U.S. Renewable Energy Research Summer Internship with the World Resources Institute

Summer interns will contribute to a variety of research, data collection, technical assistance, and operational activities that support evidence-based decision making in areas such as education, early childhood, labor, family support, and nutrition.

Summer Policy Assistant Internship with JPMorgan Chase

The JPMorgan Chase Policy Center develops and advances sustainable, evidence-based policy solutions to drive inclusive economic growth in the U.S. and around the world. It is powered by the firm's global business resources and expertise, including data, research, talent and philanthropic investments. The Policy Center works with policy, business and community leaders to drive effective solutions at all levels of government.

The Policy Assistant will directly support members of the Policy Center team across a breadth of policy strategies and special projects, and will report to the Research & Policy Chief of Staff. The role is a part of our Washington, D.C.-based team, but due to COVID precautions we anticipate this role will be remote through August 2021.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Enhance policy proposals and planning through active monitoring of legislative and regulatory actions using general online research and in-house tools
  • Contribute to success of internal and external meetings and events through materials and logistics preparation and program administrative support
  • Create and edit team work products, including PowerPoint presentations in PowerPoint, written memos in Word, and management of data as-needed in Excel

Qualifications
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills

UMD Student COVID Relief Grant

UMD has received funds from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund to distribute to eligible students as UMD Student COVID Relief Grants. These grants can be used for any component of the student’s cost of attendance or for emergency costs that arise due to the pandemic, such as:
  • assistance with food purchases,
  • needs related to housing/rent/utilities,
  • assistance with health care (including mental health care) or child care expenses,
  • the payment of tuition or purchase of course materials, and/or
  • technology-related needs.

Paid Market Intelligence Analyst Internship



The Market Intelligence Analyst Intern should have a background in business, economics, consulting, research, product management, corporate strategy, or business development. They should be well-versed in researching technology innovation and developing thesis and recommendations for corporate-level strategies and business cases. The intern should also be able to garner insights from conferences, talks, outreach to other companies, surveys, and even developing their own market research reports. Importantly they should be able to prepare executive presentation material, analysis, and recommendations to leadership. The internship position can start as soon as possible with a negotiable time frame, depending on the candidate.

What you’ll do:

The successful candidate will be expected to perform a variety of assignments in the areas of product research, market management and market research. As part of this, the candidate will:
  • Develop market intelligence and insight on key sectors and industry trends (including technology, IP, competitors, consumers, regulatory, etc.) and their strategic implications for Rebellion 
  • Evaluate business and market strategies to identify and recommend areas of focus
  • Conduct and/or participate in complex market research studies, including data analysis and statistical modeling to support sales and marketing efforts

  • Examine, analyze, and synthesize data to forecast future procurement trends and identify customer buying preferences and pricing strategies

June Global Pathways for Students Program with the World Trade Institute of Baltimore (Apply by April 30)

The Office of International Affairs is pleased to announce an exciting international education opportunity for UMD students this summer, right in our backyard! The World Trade Center Institute in Baltimore (WTCI) is now accepting applications for the 2021 cohort of its Global Pathways for Students program.

Participants get an up-close and in-depth look at some of Maryland’s most innovative global businesses, with seven 1.5 hour virtual company visits to a variety of organizations, such as McCormick & Company, Inc., Stanley Black & Decker, Abt Associates and The Nature Conservancy.

The GPS program seeks to assemble a diverse cohort of globally-oriented college students, and is available for current sophomores, juniors, and seniors in college.

The 10-day program takes place from June 1-11.
