Economic Policy, U.S. Treasury Dept. - 2017 Summer Internship Program

SUMMER 2017 INTERNSHIPS

The Office of Economic Policy, U.S. Treasury Department is currently looking for college students interested in Economics, Finance, or Public Policy for our Summer 2017 internship session. Our program runs year round with three sessions: January through May, May through August, and September through December. Our program is about substance. Interns are generally assigned a long-term research project as well as smaller projects. They are also expected to attend Congressional Hearings and think tank lectures and presentations and summarize these events for the Assistant Secretary and other senior level economists. Candidates should have strong writing skills, be able to work independently, be well organized and highly motivated. Interns are expected to work between 32 and 40 hours a week. There is some flexibility in the work hours if you are taking classes while in D.C. Our intern positions are unpaid. We do provide a subway subsidy to help defray commuting expenses.

Center for American Politics and Citizenship Research Assistantship - Apply by Jan. 20th!

Program Description

The Center for American Politics and and Citizenship (CAPC) Research Assistantship Program is for students interested in developing their research and professional skills as well as gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of the study of American politics. Research Assistants (RAs) are paired with a faculty member who directs their research for the semester as well as helping them develop a unique project based at least in part, on the research they are conducting on behalf of the faculty member. In addition, students are also assigned a graduate student to help mentor and guide them through the research process. RAs are also given formal training in writing, data analysis, public speaking/presentation skills, conducting academic research, and formulating cogent research questions.

2017 Maryland Summer Scholars Program - Apply by Feb. 8th!

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students to spend the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research or artistic projects. Maryland Summer Scholars research may take place in College Park or anywhere in the US or abroad as required by the nature of the project.

For the summer of 2017, the program will provide awards of $3,000 to approximately 25 outstanding, competitively selected applicants. [Please note: if your proposed research requires extended travel outside of the College Park area, you may apply for a supplementary travel award of up to $1,000.]

Students who carry out Maryland Summer Scholars projects gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, fellowships, employment and other competitive opportunities. Many Summer Scholars turn their research into an independent study or honors thesis during their junior or senior year.

Research Assistant Position in the Education Policy Studies Department at AEI for December or Recent Grad

Position description
The American Enterprise Institute seeks a full-time research assistant to support AEI’s early childhood program, based in the Education Policy Studies department. The program focuses on the research, policy, and politics of early-childhood care and education (prenatal through age four); the role of early learning in expanding opportunity for low-income Americans; and the implementation challenges of rapidly growing early-childhood education initiatives.

This position provides research, writing/editing, and administrative assistance to the Resident Scholar in early childhood and to the larger Education Policy team as needed. This includes duties such as research for and editing of blogs, op-eds, policy briefs, and reports; coordinating public events and high-level private meetings; and scheduling, trip planning, record keeping, financial tracking; managing public relations; and coordination of public events and high-level private meetings.
The ideal candidate works well both independently and in a team, and possesses excellent organizational and writing skills. The ability to multi-task and work well under pressure is also required, as well as a demonstrated interest in early childhood policy.

Donald Payne Fellowship for Graduate School in International Affairs

The U.S. Agency for International Development, in cooperation with Howard University, invites outstanding individuals interested in international development and careers in the USAID Foreign Service to apply for the 2017 Donald M. The Department of Women’s Studies is sponsoring an AAUW Salary Negotiation Workshop, Tuesday, November 29, 2016, 5:45-8:15 pm. Developed by the American Association of University Women, the Start Smart workshop educates about the gender gap in pay while equipping college women and men to face the job market with the confidence, knowledge, and skills they need to negotiate better salaries and benefits.

Research Assistant Position with Urban Institute for December or Recent Grad

OVERVIEW

The nonprofit Urban Institute is dedicated to elevating the debate on social and economic policy.

Within the Urban Institute, the Policy Advisory Group (PAG) is a team of policy analysts focused on accelerating the development and use of actionable knowledge to shape and inform the policy challenges facing urban America. PAG works to address a fundamental challenge for stakeholders aiming to improve outcomes for urban areas: how to bridge the gap between research and policy.

The Policy Advisory Group seeks a dynamic and highly motivated individual to work as a Research Assistant to support research and policy analysis projects related to a variety of urban policy topics.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will support the Senior Management in the Policy Advisory Group and other research staff with background research on a range of topics by collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative information; producing PowerPoint presentations and various forms of data visualization, including tables, maps, and graphics for reports; contributing to other products that translate research for policy and practice. Research and policy topics could include pay for success, assisted housing policy, community development, economic development, and other urban policy topics.

Other tasks may include: planning and preparation for substantive interactions with researchers and policymakers; providing background support for drafting letters, emails, memos, presentations, talking points for internal and external audiences; supporting researchers preparing written products such as literature reviews, op-eds, reports, policy briefs, blog posts and social media; and support for scheduling onsite and offsite meetings.

This individual will need to exercise judgment on priority of tasks, meetings, incoming materials for review, pending decisions as well as handle confidential and non-routine information/matters.

Spring 2017 Opinion Research Internship with APCO

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in an accredited university or college as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student;
• The ideal candidate will be attentive to detail, enthusiastic, and interested in the research process;
• Applicants are expected to have excellent written and oral communication skills as well as experience handling large amounts of data;

Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students (ACES) Minor - Open to all majors!

The ACES Minor takes a multidisciplinary approach to cybersecurity in which students gain knowledge about many of the fields (criminal justice, business, public policy) that intersect in cybersecurity. Job Description

Senior Fellow Karlyn Bowman is an expert on American politics and public opinion. Interns working for her will gain tremendous exposure to the study and understanding of American ideals through public opinion polling and how American perceptions have changed over time. The internship does not require previous polling experience but does require a heavy dose of intellectual curiosity as Karlyn and her staff try to understand the American public—who they are, what they think, and how they are changing. Topics of research change every semester, with a mix of topical inquiries and long term studies. The intern will assist with research for articles, research and planning of the “AEI Political Report” (AEI’s monthly newsletter on public opinion), and research briefings on a variety of topics. The ideal candidate will have an educational background in political science or a related field, strong research abilities, editorial experience, curiosity, and a self-directed work ethic. The department is looking for a candidate to become an equal member of the public opinion team and to provide substantive input on current topics of interest. Experience with STATA or Adobe Design (InDesign and Photoshop) is a plus.

Spring 2017 Internship: South Asia Studies, American Enterprise Institute - Apply by Feb. 7th!

An intern in the South Asia Studies program at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research (AEI) will work closely with staff in the foreign and defense policy studies department on research relating to South Asian politics, economics, and security issues. The intern will focus specifically on India, but may also work on Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka or other regional topics as needed.

Duties

Tasks will include:

• Gathering news clips from Indian and international news sources
• Researching Indian political economy and demographics
• Fact checking and editing articles, and producing literature reviews as well as research concerning the domestic and foreign policies of India and Pakistan to support Sadanand Dhume's regular column and book research 

Some administrative work will be required to help assist with events and helping the scholar prepare for any speaking engagements and other ad hoc assignments.

Qualifications

Desired skills: familiarity with Excel, PowerPoint, and Lexis Nexis. Hindu/Urdu language skills are a plus. All class levels accepted.

THE PROCESS

Earn Academic Credit for Research Practicum on Campus

Research Fellows Program -- ECON488K

              Spring 2017

The Kaulkin-Ginsberg Research Fellows Program is an excellent opportunity for economics majors to gain practical experience producing market research valued by businesses.  Students stay on campus but still engage in research activities that they might do as an intern or an entry level employee working on site at a consulting firm.  The research produced could hypothetically help investors decide if they want to pursue activity in a specific segment of the business services market.  Entry into the program is competitive; only a maximum of 16 students will be selected to participate in Spring 2017. 

Students will work in small groups (3-4 per group) to gather macroeconomic and industry-specific data, analyze and interpret this information, and use findings to develop recommendations for simulated clients. Each semester’s research will focus on a different business line. Each group will examine data pertaining to unemployment rates, personal income, uncollectible debt, and collection laws. They will analyze this data with an eye to the accounts receivable management industry and private collection agencies, explaining their findings in a final executive summary and a visual presentation. 

In addition to exploring a career option appropriate for economics majors, students who succeed in the program will receive 2 credits through ECON488K: Applied Market Research Practicum. (See an ECON advisor regarding course applicability towards your degree). Students can also obtain a letter of recommendation from a respected business executive and be well-positioned to draw on a network of business contacts, opening the door for post-graduation employment opportunities

To present this opportunity, the Department of Economics has partnered with Kaulkin-Ginsberg, a leading local firm providing consulting services to other businesses, particularly on mergers and acquisitions in specific sectors of the economy.  Mr. Mike Ginsberg, Class of 1990 and president and CEO, will lead the program with assistance from a former Research Fellow, Mr. Michael Thomas, Class of 2014, who now works at Kaulkin-Ginsberg. Students with questions about the program should send an email to ugadvising@econ.umd.edu.

Minimum qualifications for participation in the Research Fellows Program include:

• Junior or Senior ECON major
• Cumulative GPA at the University of Maryland of at least 3.0
• Successful completion of either ECON305 or ECON325
• Successful completion of either ECON306 or ECON326
• Coursework or other experience using Excel, Access, or similar software
• Meet on campus Monday evenings 5:30 to 7:45 from January 30^th through April 24th
• Sign a release allowing the Department to share your academic transcript and application with Kaulkin Ginsberg*
• Grant Kaulkin Ginsberg a nonexclusive, fully paid, irrevocable right and license to use the results of your group work for internal purposes.*

Monetary Support for Experiential Learning or Conference Attendance

Gary L. Rozier Student Experience Fellowships 

Funded by a generous alumnus, these fellowships assist undergraduate economics majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom and similar activities that afford preparation for professional pursuits, including attendance at professional or academic conferences.  Preference in selecting awardees will be given for activities where financial obstacles would likely prevent a student from participating.  Amount of support is capped at $1,000 per student and will be paid into the individual student’s account in the University’s Bursar office. 

To be eligible for the fellowship, a student’s experiential learning activity or conference attendance must take place between August 29, 2016 and August 28, 2017.  This means you could request support for an activity currently underway OR taking place before the start of the fall 2017 semester.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until June 1, 2017 or until available funds are disbursed, whichever occurs first.  An announcement will be posted here on the blog when the available funds are exhausted.

Please carefully read the instructions included in the application form; each completed application should include at least 3 pages.

Students selected for this award are expected to write a letter of appreciation to Mr. Rozier which will be sent via the BSOS Office of Alumni and Donor Relations. 

Spring 2017 CESAR Internship - Apply by Nov. 16th!

Position: Undergraduate Internship (unpaid, for credit) – Spring 2017

Title: Research Assistant

Duties: The intern’s primary responsibilities will be to assist in the development and maintenance of the Maryland Community Services Locator website (www.mdcsl.org), a public service website that helps service providers and individuals in the community to access community resources. Specific duties include:

• Verify the accuracy of program listings in the database using online sources and telephone surveys
• Telephone surveys with community service providers to collect information on services provided
• Data entry (using Excel) for responses from provider surveys 
• Assist in augmenting the comprehensiveness of the existing database through database comparisons, resource inventories, etc.
• Outreach to community providers and individual community members at resource fairs to promote awareness of the MDCSL in Maryland
• Assist with dissemination of materials to providers
• Record website usage statistics to assess site utilization (using Google Analytics)
• Other duties as assigned

Boren Scholarship Informational Sessions

The Boren Scholarship is aimed at undergraduates (US citizens) who want to study abroad for one or two semesters (preferably) in 2017-18 in non-traditional regions and countries, and who are interested in learning the languages of those areas. Maryland has ranked # 1 in the nation in Boren Scholarships awarded for the past 5 years!!!

*The Boren Scholarship is a U.S. Government-funded award that seeks applicants who have a strong interest in future Government service; the award carries a one-year service expectation.*

Eligible Boren study regions include Africa, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics, Latin America, and the Middle East. (Boren Scholarships MAY NOT be used for study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.) Boren Scholarships for 2017-18 may be used for study abroad in Summer 2017, Fall 2017 and/or Spring 2018.

Spring 2017 Internships with Human Rights Watch

The US Program of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking undergraduate interns for the spring 2017 semester. The interns will learn about human rights problems inside the US, especially those related to criminal justice and immigration policy.

Specific assignments will enable students to learn about bail and sentencing reform, criminalization of drug possession, and juveniles caught in the justice system. Interns will be oriented to HRW’s research methods and gain skills in their ability to conduct research and analyze data. They will also learn how to effectively monitor the press and draft documents regarding human rights issues in the United States. They will have exposure to HRW’s methods for compiling case histories and researching relevant state and federal policies. Additional projects will be assigned as the opportunity arises. Ideally, the candidates will be available to intern 10 to 15 hours a week for the spring semester, although timing can be flexible.

Internships are unpaid. HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, interaction with other US organizations, and government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in US domestic human and civil rights issues, particularly related to criminal justice and immigration policy. Relevant coursework is highly desirable and knowledge of Spanish is a plus. Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, internet applications) and experience completing social science research are required. The intern must be a student in an accredited program for the duration of the internship term.

GQR has an opening for a paid internship in our Washington, D.C. office focusing on international political issues. This internship will last for six months and is 40 hours per week.

Responsibilities: We are seeking a full-time intern with excellent research, communication and organizational skills. The International Team Intern will work closely with the GQR International Team. Interns will get an inside perspective on public opinion polling – learning what it is, how it works and how it's used in political campaigns.

Global Health Corps Fellowship Program

GHC provides opportunities for young professionals from diverse backgrounds to work on the frontlines of the fight for global health equity in year-long fellowships.
