Role Description

Minimum Education

Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited university and returning to continue studies after the internship.

The Federal Reserve Board (Board) provides students opportunities for career success. The Board’s Internship program is designed to provide valuable work experience for undergraduate and graduate students considering careers including, but not limited to, economics, finance and accounting, information systems, and data analysis. The Board believes that by combining academic endeavors with project-related work experience, qualified and capable college students can gain the practical knowledge need in a competitive global job market. Internships are paid positions with salaries commensurate with credit hours; internships may be in-person, remote or hybrid, depending on the needs of the team. Employment in the Board’s internship program is granted to U.S. citizens. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited university and returning to continue studies after the internship. Interns receive a syllabus or research project plan outlining their projects and goals for the internship. Interns are assigned a supervisor or mentor to guide them through their internship, and regular check-in meetings with their manager to manage performance expectations and assist with learning goals. Interns have access to a wide range of training programs and events for professional development purposes.

Qualifications – External

The Financial Management Group (FMG) is responsible for overseeing the Reserve Banks’ accounting operations, monitoring annual budget performance and cost accounting, and coordinating the combined annual financial reporting process for the Federal Reserve Banks.

The intern position will support the three FMG sections Financial Management Oversight & Systems, Spend Resource Management, and Financial Accounting Policy & Reporting with ongoing administrative tasks and projects related to key priorities. The selected candidate will gain experience in the areas of accounting policy, managerial accounting, Reserve Bank oversight and financial performance, cost accounting, and financial reporting. Primary responsibilities will be to support daily operational activities of the group and participate on various special projects. The special projects may include analysis and documentation of Accounting Standards Updates, assistance with the Financial Accounting Manual updates, and activities related to off-site monitoring of the Reserve Banks.

Competencies/Learning Objectives: Through financial analysis, decision making, effective communication, and learning agility the intern will have the opportunity to:

  • Become familiar with Federal Reserve Accounting Policy,
  • Research current accounting guidance and its potential impact on the Federal Reserve Banks,
  • Gain an understanding of the Reserve Bank oversight and risk assessment processes, and
  • Gain insight into the financial reporting and cost accounting processes of the Federal Reserve Banks.

Intern with the Science and Technology Innovation Program at the Wilson Center

Applications are open until October 31 for spring internships with the Science and Technology Innovation Program at the Wilson Center. These internships are part-time, paid, and open to current students and recent graduates.

WHAT DO STIP INTERNS DO?

STIP interns gain valuable experience in working directly on leading policy concerns. This can be through contributing to or conducting independent research, direct engagement with policy leaders, and collaboration with international governmental bodies. In this internship, you work one-on-one with leading experts in the field both within and outside the Wilson Center. We have unique hands-on experiences for interns interested in applying science and technology practices to public policy, such as through our Serious Games Initiative and THING Tank where interns might work on teams developing prototypes or supporting broader ecosystems of practitioners.

For Spring 2024, specific areas of research focus we are exploring include, but are not limited to, artificial intelligence, space, serious games, and open science. You can learn more about the Science and Technology Innovation Program and our recent work on our website.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is accepting applications for Statisticians in the Bureau of Economics. The FTC is an independent agency with a unique dual mission to police unfair methods of competition and target unfair or deceptive practices across the economy. The FTC’s work is performed by the Bureaus of Consumer Protection, Competition, and Economics. Note, all recruitment is for positions starting Summer 2024 in Washington, DC for a term position of one year with renewal for up to four years.

Duties:

In this role, you will gain real-world experience by working alongside PhD economists to protect consumers and promote competition in the US economy. Statisticians work with economists to support FTC matters, including:

Internship Opportunity at MSRPS Investment Division

The Investment Division of the Maryland State Retirement Agency seeks two bright, highly motivated individuals to join our Investment Analyst Internship Program. Each Intern will have a hands-on opportunity to apply what has been learned in the classroom to a real world, large-scale investment operation. The interns will be assigned special projects, learn how to utilize financial software, and work with experts who are responsible for investing the plan assets of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System, totaling approximately $65.2 Billion as of June 30, 2023. This is an opportunity for students going into their junior, senior, or graduate studies, or a recent graduate (December 2023 or May 2024) at the start of the internship.

The start of the internship is May 29, 2024. This internship will run about 12 weeks, subject to the availability of selected candidates. This internship will follow a hybrid model: a combination of in-person and virtual presence will be required.

As a Summer Intern you will:
  • Have the opportunity to work on special projects in one or more areas of the Investment Division
  • Conduct research projects that could directly be implemented to make investment decisions
  • Present research findings to senior management
  • Have the opportunity to learn about macroeconomic and political events through industry seminars & conferences and how those events tie into the investment process
  • Learn about and assist with the investment manager due-diligence process
  • Acquire foundational skills over a wide range of investment disciplines and asset classes
  • Perform other department related projects and duties as assigned

On Thursday, October 19th, UMD's Actuarial Club will be hosting its first actuarial company, Cigna, in person. They will give a talk about the actuarial field in general, what exactly Cigna does as a health insurance company, and then set aside some time to answer questions. The speaker will also talk about Cigna's extremely prestigious summer actuarial internship program.

Ten grand prize winners will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Duke's Fuqua School of Business where  they will present their proposals  to influential business leaders and  participate in a live  case study. Winners who apply to and are admitted to one of Fuqua's one-year master’s programs will also receive some partial scholarship funding.

International Monetary Fund Hiring Research Analysts


The Middle East and Central Asia Department of the International Monetary Fund has three openings for Research Analysts. The positions are full-time, entry-level, one-year contractual appointments renewable for up to four years. Applicants must have residency status within 35 miles of Washington, D.C., but may have citizenship from any of the IMF’s 190 member countries. This is not an internship. The expected starting dates for the positions are in November 2023.

Responsibilities:
The research analyst uses quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, knowledge of technology and information systems, and research abilities to support the operational work of the Fund. New York Fed Webinar "Demystifying a Career Path in Economics and Advancing Diversity"




The Federal Reserve Bank of New York would like to invite college students and professors nationwide to attend our webinar: “Demystifying a Career Path in Economics and Advancing Diversity” to be held on Wednesday, October 18, from 4:00p.m. to 5:30p.m.

The webinar will provide information about careers in economics and aims to broaden awareness of opportunities in the field across a more diverse talent pool. New York Fed economists and research analysts (RAs) will discuss the path to become an economist, why they chose careers in economics, their experience in the field, and the importance of expanding diversity in the profession.

Economists and RAs, as well as representatives from the Bank’s People and Engagement department, will also talk about: tips for success in the field of economics (college and beyond); potential career paths at the New York Fed and in the wider marketplace; the role of RAs and college-level interns in the Bank; and career-planning resources and mentoring information. 2024 Application Open: Expanding Diversity in Economics, A UChicago Summer Institute

The Expanding Diversity in Economics Summer Institute (EDE) is accepting applications for its 2024 program now through Monday, Jan. 15, 2024. EDE is a University of Chicago program hosted by the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics (BFI) and the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at Brookings, designed to identify and support talented undergraduate students from a broad range of backgrounds interested in the study of economics.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural week of programming in Washington, DC, EDE will again send students to study current issues in fiscal and monetary policies and the people and institutions who make them. We are excited to have the DC week hosted once more by the Hutchins Center, whose mission is to improve the quality and efficacy of fiscal and monetary policies and the public’s understanding of them.

Who Should Apply?
Students enrolled in an accredited, undergraduate degree-granting institution in the United States are eligible to apply. Participants must be 18 years old by the program start date of June 6, 2024, and the ideal applicant will be a college freshman or sophomore with an interest in learning more about economics and with an aptitude for quantitative coursework. Our goal is to recruit a diverse group of students from a broad range of backgrounds. 
For students accepted to EDE, there are no program fees. Participants who successfully complete the program are awarded a stipend of $1,200. Pell Grant recipients receive a stipend of $2,400. The University of Chicago will cover the costs of economy-class domestic travel, housing, and meals, including several planned outings for the group in both Chicago and Washington, DC.
