Bright Futures Unpaid Internship Scholarship Fund Application

The Bright Futures Unpaid Internship Scholarship awards undergraduate students with need-based scholarships ranging from $100-$1,000 to help offset expenses incurred during unpaid internships in the summer with government agencies and non-profit organizations. Scholarships are generously funded by the Eisen Family, the University Career Center & The President’s Promise, and individual donors through Maryland Giving Day.

The Bright Futures Summer 2026 Application will open on Mon, March 30, 2026 and close on Mon, May 4, 2026.


ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES
All registered University of Maryland, College Park undergraduate students returning to campus for the fall 2026 semester, who have an unpaid internship for summer 2026, are eligible to apply. Graduating seniors are not eligible. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors graduating in December. Preference will also be given to those who have not previously received this scholarship.


In order for your internship to qualify for funding support, it must satisfy the following criteria:
1. Unpaid on-campus or off-campus internship with a non-profit organization or government agency.
2. New internship experience during summer 2026 and completed by the start of the fall 2026 semester.
3. Supervised by a professional in the field.
4. Along with your completed Bright Futures application (available March 30, 2026), our Supervisor Agreement form is also completed and submitted by your internship supervisor. Download & save this document onto your computer - do not fill out in the web browser or it will not save properly.

Stanford Law School Empirical Research Fellowship

Assist Stanford Law School faculty, including economists Dr. John J. Donohue and Dr. Alison D. Morantz, in conducting policy-relevant empirical social science research. Designed for graduating seniors or recent college or master’s program graduates, the fellowship pro- vides a unique opportunity for those considering graduate school, law school, and/or business school in the future.


Over the past 5 years, research fellows have matriculated in PhD programs at: Harvard (Economics), Berkeley, (Economics), Columbia (Economics), Harvard (Sociology), Harvard (Health Policy), MIT (Economics), Northwestern (Economics), UC San Diego (Economics), University of Chicago (Economics), Cambridge (Economics), University of Pennsylvania (Economics), University of Pennsylvania (Finance). Participation in this fellowship opportunity allows you to take and audit Stanford courses and attend on-campus lectures and seminars free of charge. In addition, incumbents in this fellowship will be eligible to take one course per quarter, not to exceed a maximum of 5 units (for which departments will pay a discounted fee), with approval from your faculty supervisor.

Opportunity Insights Predoctoral Fellowships

Opportunity Insights (OI) recently completed a successful round of hires for our predoctoral program from our Fall 2024 hiring process. 

OI is excited to announce our Spring 2025 hiring round where we will identify additional fellows for our predoctoral program beginning in July 2025. These full-time positions will be based in Cambridge, MA. Predoctoral fellows will work closely with Raj Chetty (Harvard), John Friedman (Brown), Nathan Hendren (MIT), and other OI collaborators at Harvard and other universities.

 

The predoctoral fellowship is geared toward students interested in working with us for two years after graduating from an undergraduate or master’s program. Predoctoral fellows will work on research and analyses related to economic mobility. Additionally, predoctoral fellows have opportunities to participate in seminars and other research activities in a team-oriented lab environment. The program serves as a good bridge between college and graduate school for students interested in applied economics and mobility scholarship. Our Spring application deadline is Tuesday, February 11, 2025.

 

We particularly encourage applications from groups traditionally under-represented in Economics. Even if applicants are uncertain whether their technical research skills or subject-matter knowledge will be competitive, we strongly encourage their application.

CFPB Director’s Financial Analyst Program

The DFA Program is a highly selective, two-year full-time rotational fellowship designed to engage new entry professionals in meaningful public service work. We seek a select number of recent college graduates to join the CFPB in this entry-level job that challenges them to use their analytical skills to help make financial markets work better for all. DFAs utilize their analytical capabilities to support Bureau initiatives including, but not limited to, research, benchmarking, comparative analysis, data analysis, problem solving, collaboration, and project management. DFAs complete two, year-long rotations in various divisions of the CFPB, gaining an understanding of the Bureau’s mission and work as well as exposure to multiple policy areas.

The CSIS Policy Fellowship is a semester-long opportunity for undergraduate students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to engage in the national security field. Fellows will gain insights into global issues such as human security, climate change, and technology while learning from top foreign policy experts.

Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors at eligible universities in the DMV area (including the University of Maryland), this program offers a $1,500 stipend and covers travel needs. The International Trade Administration has launched a U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service Fellowship pilot program for those pursuing studies in international affairs, economics, business, public administration, and trade.

We’ll be selecting up to 20 students to join one of our Commercial Service international post teams for an eight-week living/learning opportunity in summer 2025, which will include a one-week orientation session in Washington, D.C., and up to $35,000 in financial assistance to cover housing, per diem, and other costs. The program is designed to increase knowledge of the Commercial Service, including career opportunities at ITA and in the field of international trade.

Junior Stanley Surrey Fellow in the Office of Tax Analysis, U.S. Department of the Treasury

Graduating seniors (graduating in 2023 or 2024) in Economics! Apply for the position of Junior Stanley Surrey Fellow in the Office of Tax Analysis (OTA), U.S. Department of the Treasury. The fellowship is a great entry level position for economics students who want to work in public policy, further develop skills and who enjoy a fast-paced collegial environment.

The position requires either:

• a degree in economics including 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus; or 

• a combination of formal education and experience that is equivalent to a major in economics with the appropriate course work. 

Fellows must also be U.S. citizens.

The fellowship is a 2-year full-time, paid work position (GS-7 or 9 depending on experience) in Washington, D.C. and is often used as a bridge between undergraduate and graduate education. Fellows are up for promotion to a higher grade level after one year. Our office is currently on a hybrid work schedule with 2 required workdays in the Treasury Building. The number of required workdays in the office may increase.
