Spring 2017 Internships with Center for International Private Enterprise - Apply by Nov. 18th!

ANTI-CORRUPTION/VALUE CHAINS AND CONFLICT TASKFORCES INTERN

Description: CIPE supports the positive role that the private sector can play in fragile and conflict-affected states, as well as environments rife with corruption. This internship provides an opportunity to explore the role of the private sector in emerging democracies with attention to anti-corruption and conflict/post-conflict initiatives. Specifically, the intern will support two separate CIPE staff working groups: the Conflict and Anti-Corruption/Value Chains Task Forces. Undergraduate (rising junior or above preferred), graduate, or law students demonstrating interest in the positive role that the private sector can play in fragile and conflict-affected states are encouraged to apply.

Reports to: Anti-Corruption/Value Chains Task Force and Conflict Task Force Leaders

Key Areas of Responsibility:
  • Research and write blogs on topics related to the role of the private sector in conflict and post-conflict affected areas and fragile states, private sector-led anti-corruption initiatives, and compliance in global value chains.
  • Compile bi-monthly briefs for both task forces including relevant news, articles, and upcoming events in Washington, D.C.
  • Attend events of interest in the Washington, D.C. areas.
  • Assist with logistics of events organized by CIPE’s Conflict or Value Chains Task Forces.
  • Conduct short-term research projects to provide background information on various issues and support for program research. Update and maintain resource materials for the team listservs and internal database. Help co-create social media campaigns to raise awareness for these themes.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Previous interest and experience in at least one of the following: economic development in conflict-affected areas, post-conflict reconstruction, stabilization, anti-corruption, international relations, economic development, and/or related areas of work.
  • Demonstrated interest in international issues related to democratic transitions and the role of market-oriented reform in promoting democratic development. Evidence of such interest could take the form of academic work or volunteer activities, for example.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English required; proficiency in a second language a plus.
  • Experience conducting in-depth research.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms; and,
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.

EVALUATION INTERN

Description: CIPE’s Evaluation Unit works with CIPE’s programmatic teams to design and carry out successful evaluations of projects. The Evaluation Intern will have an opportunity to understand results-based democratization and gain practical experience in research, and the use of evaluation tools and methodology.

Reports To: Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Conduct desk research on CIPE projects or themes related to CIPE projects (e.g. public private dialogue, women and youth entrepreneurship)
  • Assist in designing and validating evaluation tools (e.g. needs assessments, surveys, focus groups).
  • Assist in building a database of indicators for different types of democratization programs.
  • Draft or edit research reports or presentations.
  • Use data visualization software to present data in chart, graph, or map format.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Previous interest and demonstrated experience in at least one of the following: research methods, program evaluation, international relations, democracy building, entrepreneurship, trade facilitation and/or related areas of work.
  • Demonstrated interest in international issues surrounding democratic transitions, the role of civil society in promoting policy reform, economic development through trade, etc. (please see CIPE’s website for the full list of our Areas of Expertise).
  • Ability to conduct in-depth research.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Knowledge of statistical software, social media platforms, and/or data visualization software a plus.

Description: The Women’s Entrepreneurship Staff Working Group is responsible for advising and assisting CIPE's regional teams in the development and implementation of women-specific programs around the world. Since 1999, CIPE’s regional teams have implemented over 60 projects that work in or with women business owners and associations in 58 countries in all regions of the world. This work includes entrepreneurship and leadership training, mentoring, association and Chamber of Commerce capacity building, advocacy and public policy training, conferences, forums and public-private dialogue. The Women’s Entrepreneurship Staff Group intern will play a critical role in contributing to the group’s efforts to assess the data and impact of CIPE’s women’s programming. The intern will also support the working group in sharing best practices and lessons learned as they relate to CIPE’s women’s entrepreneurship programs.

Reports To: Women’s Entrepreneurship Staff Working Group Co-chairs

Key Areas of Responsibility:
  • Researching, writing and editing reports, case studies, and blog posts describing women’s programs in ways that highlight best practices and lessons from the field, as well as innovative practices drawn from other organizations.
  • Maintaining a database of CIPE projects on women’s entrepreneurship and empowerment.
  • Participating in the writing of grant proposals to support new and expanded women’s programs.
  • Attending and reporting back to the team on selected internal meetings and external events.
  • Assisting team members in responding to requests for information regarding CIPE’s women’s programs.
  • Updating and maintaining resource materials for the team listserv and internal database.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Previous interest and demonstrated experience in at least one of the following: women and leadership, women in business, women’s entrepreneurship, women and management, training, research methods, civic education and related areas of work.
  • Demonstrated interest in international issues related to democratic transitions and the role of civil society in promoting democratic reform.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in a second language a plus.
  • Interest in gaining skills in qualitative and quantitative data analysis
