Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Summer Internship
If you are interning this summer, here are some tips on getting the most out of your experience and securing offer to return:
- Be on time and be organized.
- Ask good questions to appropriate people. Take notes and make sure you understand what you have to do.
- Take ownership of your work product. Make it is the best that it can be and solicit advice from colleagues when appropriate.
- Do your research. Read through investor presentations, company statement filings and any relevant company materials. During earnings season, take note of what sectors are doing well, which are not, and any news that might be relevant to your role or desk.
- Have a keen attention to detail. Don’t make spelling, grammar or editing mistakes. Triple check your work. A helpful tip is to print materials out and review them as it is easier to catch mistakes on paper than on a screen. If you do make a mistake then take ownership and don’t make the same mistake again.
- Network with people at the firm, whether they are in your division or not. You should constantly be meeting new people and learning from them. If you happen to be in NYC or another metropolitan area, take advantage and schedule coffee chats or attend networking events.
