Paid Global Market Development Internship with the Milken Institute Starting Soon

Position description

The Milken Institute is a non-profit, nonpartisan think tank determined to increase global prosperity by advancing collaborative solutions that widen access to capital, create jobs, and improve health. We do this through independent, data-driven research, action-oriented convenings, and meaningful policy proposals.

The Institute’s Global Market Development (GMD) practice helps build and strengthen financial markets in emerging markets and developing economies. The practice does so in several ways, including (i) by facilitating an informed and coordinated policymaking process across government institutions, private-sector stakeholders, and civil society; (ii) by providing training to a generation of leaders in central banks, finance ministries, securities regulators, and other agencies charged with supervising and/or developing financial markets; and (iii) working with international development partners to pursue innovative approaches to financing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

About the Internship

The intern will join the GMD team in Q1 2021 and will continue working with the team through the summer. This is a paid, temporary, non-exempt position. The intern will assist senior staff on a number of projects, ranging from researching financial markets in developing countries, to conducting literature reviews and maintaining datasets, to supporting the IFC-Milken Institute Capital Markets Program, a training program on capital markets for policymakers from developing and emerging market countries.

Responsibilities:
  • Conducting research and preparing background materials on financial markets in developing and emerging-market countries
  • Analyzing reports from international financial institutions to investigate a country’s financial health and strategic priorities
  • Managing lists of stakeholders and planning for convenings with policymakers and financial experts as well as panels at Milken Institute summits and conferences
  • Contributing to research, database management, and knowledge products related to economic recovery in African countries in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, including for our site covid19africawatch.org
  • Supporting the development of our training program and staffing our educational events for IFC-Milken Institute Fellows
  • Supporting the design and execution of the Milken Institute’s innovation prize platform
  • Assisting with additional GMD work as needed
Reporting Relationships/Scope

The intern will be a part of the GMD team and will report to senior staff. The intern will work closely with GMD staff as well as the wider Milken Institute Milken website team in Washington, DC, and around the world.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following characteristics:

  • Professionalism: The intern will be expected to represent the Milken Institute to external parties, including to senior policymakers and/or business executives, with a high level of professional courtesy and tact. The ability to write a good business email is essential, as is the ability to hold a meaningful conversation on the phone. We are also looking for someone who is comfortable working in multicultural environments and with international organizations. Attention to detail is paramount, and we begin evaluating this characteristic as soon as we open the application materials we ask for below.
  • Drive: The ideal intern will be ambitious and eager to take on new responsibilities and new challenges. We are looking for someone who works hard to advance projects, even with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of capital markets and economic development: The intern will be expected to be financially literate and able to knowledgeably discuss themes related to financial markets as well as wider issues of economic development. Knowledge of the banking sector, financial inclusion issues, FinTech, money markets, derivatives, financial regulation, and the debates about foreign aid and assistance would also be useful.
  • Native or near-native level of English: It is essential the intern is able to speak and write in English with ease. Professional writing and editing experience would be useful. Please do not apply unless you are a highly confident English speaker.
  • Statistical training and/or the ability to code: These qualities are less important than the characteristics above, but could certainly set an applicant apart from others applying for this post. If you know how to use statistical software or know coding languages, it is recommended that you highlight these abilities in your cover letter.
Note: Temporarily, due to COVID-19 this position is currently working remotely and any applicant should plan to return to the office in the future.

For best consideration, apply by January 31 on the Milken website.
