Internship Opportunity at the Bureau of Economics

Deadline: October 15, 2025

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is now soliciting interest for unpaid, part-time Interns in the Bureau of Economics starting in January 2026. This is a great opportunity for juniors and seniors with coursework in Economics, Statistics, Data Science, or Computer Science.


Duties

In this role, you will gain real-world experience by working alongside PhD economists to protect consumers and promote competition in the US economy. Interns work with economists to support FTC matters, including:
- providing economic and statistical analysis in support of antitrust investigations, consumer protection cases, and rulemaking;
- conducting academic research and developing reports on the functioning of markets in the economy.


The ideal candidate for this position has

- A strong interest in and intuition for applied microeconomics;
- Proficiency in programming languages widely used in economics, statistics, and/or data science such as Stata, R, or Python;
- Excitement about conducting data analysis on a wide range of datasets in support of consumer protection and competition missions of the FTC;
- Interest and aptitude in working with PhD economists on economics research projects that serve the mission of the FTC; and
- A desire to grow and build on skills in data analysis and microeconomics.


Position details

All recruitment is for positions starting January 2026 for a position overlapping with the academic term, through to the beginning of Summer 2026.
The job location will be on site at the FTC Headquarters Building in Washington DC.
Candidates should plan to be on-site part-time at the FTC during the duration of the internship. The specific schedule can be arranged upon hiring.

UMD Undergraduate Climate Finance Project Award Competition Academic Year 2025-2026

 

The Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Department (AOSC) in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences and the Finance Department in the Robert H. Smith School of Business announce the fifth year of a competition intended to stimulate collaboration among undergraduate students to address the challenges of climate change. This competition recognizes the growing importance of effective partnerships in solving these major climate-related problems.  Students from all majors are welcome! To be eligible, teams must be composed of two to four current UMCP undergraduate students, with the condition that at least one team member be an AOSC major and at least one team member be a Smith School of Business Finance major. A third or fourth team member may be a major in any department.  If you want to participate but don’t know students in other departments, we will help you join a team. Just add your information to the form below.

The teams will present the results of their projects to a group of faculty and students near the end of the Spring semester (Date TBD), who will determine the winners. The awards will be $2000 for each member of the 1st place team, $1500 for each member of the 2nd place team, and $1000 for each member of the 3rd place team.  Members of non-placing teams will each receive $500.

New Winter 2026 Education Abroad Class: "A Green Giant? Environmentalism and Technology in Germany, Today and Yesterday."

Explore the history and future of green technologies in Munich! This three credit study-abroad course will focus on Germany’s role as an economic and technological powerhouse and its claim to be a global environmental leader from the 1930s to the 2020s. Topics include the roles of scientists and engineers during and after the Nazi dictatorship, the complicity of big business in the Holocaust, and the rise of environmentalism and of green technology in recent decades. Munich is an ideal site to study these issues. We will work with curators at the Deutsches Museum, the world’s largest museum for the history of science and technology, tour the Dachau concentration camp memorial site, and visit the BMW factory.
 
The deadline to sign up is 9/30. You can earn credit for one of these three-credit courses: HIST252, ECON258G, ENES269Z, GERS262, CPSP279G, and PHPE308Q. This course also counts as an elective for the Sustainability minor, as an elective for the STEP minor, and as a practicum for the STS Scholars program under the ENES designation. Scholarships are available.

The Maryland State Retirement and Pension Systems is currently hiring for a Summer Investment Associate Intern. The Maryland State Retirement Agency (the “Agency”) is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (the “System”).
