The Voyager Scholarship, administered by the Obama Foundation and supported by AIRBNB founder Brian Chesky, supports students planning careers in public service by providing up to $50,000 for college costs AND transformative travel experiences.

Important: The Voyager Scholarship is for students who are Sophomores in Spring 2024, who have demonstrated financial need, have a GPA of at least 3.0, and plan to pursue careers in public service.

Benefits of the Voyager Scholarship:

• Financial aid up to $50,000: Students will receive up to $25,000 per year in “last dollar” financial aid to cover remaining tuition and/or living costs for their junior and senior years of college.
• Students will design their own summer voyage between their junior and senior year of college with a budget of $10,000.
• 10-year travel stipends: After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2,000 travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20,000.
• Access to annual Summit Meetings

Eligibility: to apply for Voyager Scholarships students must:

• Demonstrate financial need (as determined by FAFSA)
• Be finishing their sophomore year in Spring 2024
• Plan to enroll full-time as a junior in Fall 2024.
• Have four (4) semesters or six (6) quarters of full-time academic coursework remaining before graduating
• Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent
• Have demonstrated a commitment to public service
• Plan to pursue a career in public service upon graduation
• Be a United States (U.S.) citizen, U.S. permanent resident (holder of a Permanent Resident Card), or an individual granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA).

BSOS Experience Fund Applications are Still Open for Spring 2024

 **Funds are still available for ECON majors for Spring 2024**

These funds assist undergraduate BSOS majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom, such as unpaid internships, research, service-learning, and professional or academic virtual conferences. The funds are intended to help offset expenses related to such activities including, but not limited to:

• travel/transportation expense
• professional attire
• software/technology, material needs, not provided by employer/University, but essential to the experience.
• conference fees
• opportunity costs, (i.e. the need to give up a part-time paid job in order to take an unpaid internship.)

This year there are three awards specifically for ECON majors:

• The Gary L. Rozier Professional Experience Fellowships for Economics Majors
• The Peggy Rae and John Sapienza Scholarship Fund
• The Robert R. Satterfield Economics Student Opportunities Endowed Funds

Survey Statistics Internship with D3: Designs, Data, Decisions

D3 is once again offering a summer internship with their Data Science, Statistics, and Methodology team. The full positing is also on Handshake. Information on the DSSM team and work can be found on their website (D3 Systems). The internship is a great introduction for students interested in data, coding, and research to learn about the exciting world of survey statistics and all of the real-world puzzles that come with it.

The internship will be hybrid throughout the summer with 1-2 days in the Tysons Corner office (metro accessible) and the rest work from home. The position is full-time but flexible with compensation between $25-$30 an hour.

Richmond Fed Hiring Research Assistants

Three research assistant (RA) positions are available in the Richmond Fed research department to start in June 2024. Candidates can apply here.

Applications considered on a rolling basis, but interested candidates encouraged to apply before February 18th. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or Green Card holders, since sponsorship or practical training extensions are not available for this position.
 
This is a full time, two-year position for candidates who will have completed their undergrad degree by the start date of June 2024; it should be particularly interesting to someone considering an academic career in economics.

 
The Richmond Fed research department is committed to mentoring their RAs and interns in their learning and next steps. About 50% of their RAs and interns go on to a PhD in economics, and they get placed in solid, and sometimes top, programs (in the last 3 years: Chicago, Stanford, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Cornell, Brown, UCLA, Wash U).

The Inter-American Devlopment Bank Research Department is looking for motivated, organized, and experienced research assistants. Selected candidates will work with some of the region’s top economists in an inclusive, collaborative, and rewarding environment during their 18-month experience in Washington, DC.

Candidates must have an undergraduate or master's degree in economics, public policy or a related field, and a strong quantitative background. They must also have at least two years of experience in applied research at a recognized university, research center or government agency, among other requirements.

Research Assistants typically go on to pursue PhD or master’s programs in highly ranked universities. Interested applicants may submit their applications at this link by February 29.
