Terrapins Connect Pride Mentorship Program

This program is a 6-week mentorship program designed to bring together talented LGBTQ+ students and their allies and connect them with experienced alumni. Mentorship offers many opportunities — promoting career and scholarly success, helping in career exploration, and building important, lasting relationships with others. The program will run from March 26-May 3, 2024.

Note there will be a limited number of spots for mentors and mentees. By joining the program you are not guaranteed to be matched, though we will do our best to match all interested parties.

Join the Department of Economics at Maryland Day 2024 on Saturday, April 27th !
Maryland Day is the University’s annual springtime open house and is always a day of
learning, fun, and discovery for the UMD community and our neighbors. We are looking
for students interested in volunteering alongside ECON staff to help lead departmental
activities (like a fun risk aversion game that rewards players with candy. and speak to
members of the public and prospective students about the major.

Volunteers can staff the table in two hour shifts from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on the day and will get a free Maryland Day t-shirt for lending a hand. Please fill out this Google Form with your contact information and availability to be added to the list.

As the date approaches, you will be emailed with additional information about the event.

Economics Internship at the Food and Drug Administration

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) invites undergraduate juniors or seniors, or master’s students majoring in Economics, Data Science, Information Systems, Public Health, or other Statistics-related fields to apply for an internship with the Economics Staff in the Office of the Commissioner. Selected interns will assist members of the Economics Staff in setting up processes to improve workflow and conducting economic analyses of major FDA policies and regulations related to food, human drugs, medical devices, biological products, tobacco products, and animal drugs and feed.

Internships will be for at least one academic semester and require a minimum commitment of 16 hours per week. Intern positions are unpaid; however, students may be able to earn college credit. U.S. citizenship is required of all interns. 

Candidates must have at least Junior Standing and have completed classes in econometrics and intermediate microeconomics, or similar classes on computational methods for data analysis by the time of the internship. Competitive candidates are detail-focused, have strong communication and writing skills, and can work independently. We encourage candidates to apply who have experience with Microsoft 365 including Access, Excel, Word, and SharePoint Online; analytical software such as STATA and R; and applications such as Python.

Application packages must include a cover letter and current resume. Include in your cover letter a statement of interest and an acknowledgement that you are applying for an unpaid, 16 hour-per-week internship. Include in your resume a list of relevant courses and a declaration of citizenship.

FDIC Student Trainee Economist Position

This position is located in the Division of Insurance and Research, Headquarters of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and provides support in the areas of projects related to enhancing the Corporation's programs for identifying, monitoring, and addressing existing and emerging aggregate risks to the Corporation's deposit insurance funds. This Internship will begin Summer 2024.

Duties

• Performs research and compiles financial and economic information related to existing and emerging risks to the Corporation's deposit insurance funds.
• Maintains and updates various office files to include work papers, data files, and records.
• Use various computer software (e.g., spreadsheet, database, presentation, mapping, design, and economic) to extract data and generate reports to support staff.

Sophomore Externship - RISE@AG

The Rise@AG externship will be held in-person in our Boston office from Monday, August 12 through Friday, August 16. At the end of the program, you will have the opportunity to have a final round interview for a 2025 summer internship offer. While the program will be hosted in Boston, you will have the opportunity to interview with your first office preference from any of our 9 US offices. All costs will be covered including travel, accommodation, meals, etc. for the week-long Externship.

Qualifications:

• Current undergraduate student who expects to graduate in either winter 2025 or spring 2026 and who identifies as Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American/Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander

• Minimum of 3.3 GPA

• Passion for using data and analytics

• Enjoys working in a collaborative environment

• Available for a full week-long, in-person program in August 2024, and must have legal authorization to work in the United States
