Summer 2024 Internship with the FTC's Bureau of Economics

The Bureau of Economics of the Federal Trade Commission is hiring interns for Summer 2024. We are looking for advanced undergraduate economics students who are interested in exploring graduate school (such as those considering a pre-doc for the fall of 2025) or economic policy jobs after graduation. We are especially interested in students with substantive experience analyzing data in Stata, R, or Python, and excellent written and oral communication skills. The intern would work with some of our 80 PhD economists to support economic analysis in support of antitrust and consumer protection investigations and/or applied microeconomics research projects. The intern would work in a leading policy and research group – FTC economists present at leading academic conferences and publish in top journals.

(While the position title says that this is for an “office automation” role, the job would involve the tasks described above and that are in the job description.)

Morgan Stanley Summer 2025 Internship

The Operations Division at Morgan Stanley is the front line of defense for the Firm's financial and operational well-being and works closely with almost all departments in order to safeguard the Firm's reputation and franchise. Operations partners with Sales & Trading, Finance, Legal, and Technology to execute the Firm's institutional, retail, and asset management businesses - via supporting and settling daily transactions, devising and implementing effective controls, developing strong client relationships, and engaging with its business partners to enable development of new structures, businesses, and markets.

Summer Analysts join us for a 10-week Summer Analyst Program beginning in June. This includes broad exposure to various functions across Operations and the financial services industry and a Firm orientation and an intensive hands-on introduction to Operations at Morgan Stanley through on the job training and a group project. There will also be opportunities to engage with members of the Operations senior management team.

Role and Responsibilities:

• Collaborate across the various Operations teams to evaluate and reengineer processes to drive greater operational efficiency.
• Obtain a broad understanding of Operations and its departmental interdependencies.
• Present to senior management.
• Partner with business units and technology to deliver exceptional service to our clients in the areas of trade capture, clearance and settlement, account opening, cash management, billing, tax reporting and fraud monitoring.
• Partner with Technology to design, manage and implement business process changes to streamline processes, improve productivity and optimize operational efficiency.
• Effectively identify and mitigate operational risk while ensuring continued compliance with global regulatory requirements.
• Establish and maintain effective client relationships in order to deliver world class operational services.

Qualifications and Skills:

• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
• Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree and graduating between December 2025 and June 2026

Housing Policy Council Look for UMD ECON Major for Paid Summer Internship

HPC is seeking a Summer Intern/Research Assistant to work at our Washington, D.C. office. This is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure and build business acumen.

The Housing Policy Council (HPC) is a nonpartisan trade association representing the nation’s leading participants in the housing finance market. The President of the HPC, ED DeMarco, is a member of the Economic Leadership Council and is a strong supporter of our ECON undergraduate program. The Summer Intern/Research Assistant will assist the HPC staff with a variety of projects pertaining to mortgage policy, capital markets, membership, events management, government relations and administration. In conjunction with HPC staff, the intern will:

• Utilize mortgage databases to analyze data and generate reports on the mortgage market’s structure, size, and performance
• Provide research assistance in the drafting of internal memos, research papers, and comment letters on pending regulations
• Attend and report on Congressional hearings
• Assist with logistics for HPC’s Annual Meeting

Required qualifications for this position include:
Education:

• Must be a rising sophomore, junior or senior in a bachelor’s program at an accredited academic institution. Economics majors preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Strong organizational skills.
• Takes initiative and problem-solves.
• Ability to follow-through on projects and to operate within deadlines.
• A strong desire to learn and to work hard.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint).

The schedule for this position is 24-32 hours per week. This internship is expected to begin in May 2024 and last up to three months. The Summer Intern/Research Assistant will work at HPC’s Washington D.C. office three designated days per week. There will also be an option to telework one designated day per week.
