Applications are now being collected for the 2024 NABE Scholars Program, which provides access to valuable learning and networking opportunities for diverse and underrepresented early-career economists and students interested in pursuing a career in applied economics. This year's cohort of 20 NABE Scholars will receive complimentary registration to the 2024 NABE Foundation Economic Measurement Seminar, the 2024 NABE Annual Meeting, the 2024 NABE Tech Economics Conference, and the 2025 NABE Economic Policy Conference. In addition, each Scholar will receive complimentary registration to one Certified Business Economist (CBE) course of their choice, a total travel stipend of $400, and a one-year complimentary NABE membership.

CBO Summer Internship for Graduating and Rising Seniors

The Congressional Budget Office’s summer internship program provides an excellent opportunity for students to experience and observe the budget process and policymaking at the federal level. Most of CBO’s employees are in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, and the internships will ideally be conducted in a hybrid manner. The summer internship program runs from May 28, 2024, to August 2, 2024; there may be some flexibility in those dates.
Interns contribute to CBO’s work on topics such as the slowdown in Medicare spending, the enrollment of immigrants in federal benefit programs, the availability and use of military aircraft, and financial risk in mortgage programs—as well as to estimating the budgetary costs of legislative proposals. In addition, interns participate in an educational program that includes briefings on CBO’s role in the budget process. Qualifications
All CBO summer internships require solid writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely. Familiarity with computer programming, statistics, econometrics, and other quantitative methods is required. Ideal candidates also have exceptional interpersonal and analytical skills. Assistant Analyst Position
The Congressional Budget Office is a small nonpartisan agency that provides economic and budgetary analysis to the Congress. CBO’s Budget Analysis Division, which develops multiyear budget projections and cost estimates for nearly every bill approved by Congressional committees, seeks an assistant analyst to work in its Natural and Physical Resources Cost Estimates Unit. The assistant analyst will work mainly on topics in agriculture, conservation, and other areas in the unit’s portfolio.
CBO’s assistant analysts work both independently and collaboratively and often on tight deadlines to respond to Congressional requests. They typically work on several bills simultaneously, gathering and synthesizing information by collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data. They are required to communicate often with other CBO staff members and with staff at federal agencies and other organizations.
This is an entry-level position limited to a three-year appointment. It is ideal for a candidate who is interested in gaining substantive work experience before attending graduate school in public policy, economics, law, or another analytical field. It is open only to those who have or are completing a bachelor’s degree; it is not for someone who has or is completing a graduate degree.
Qualifications
Candidates must have completed a bachelor’s degree by June 2024 and have a strong academic background in economics, mathematics, statistics, finance, computer science, policy analysis, or a related field. The position requires strong quantitative skills, exceptional written and oral communication skills, perseverance, and a desire to work on issues of interest to the Congress.

Free Hybrid Conference on International Policy and Diplomacy, April 12
The Public Liaison Division of the Department of State’s Bureau of Global Public Affairs (GPA/SOE/PL) is organizing the second annual, hybrid Minority-Serving Institutions (MSI) Conference to raise awareness about the Secretary of State’s foreign policy priorities and the reasons why diplomacy is important to every American. The conference also aims to advance the department’s diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) efforts.
This conference will build on the success of the inaugural MSI conference in 2023, the previous 13 conferences for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and three symposia for students of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) hosted by GPA/SOE/PL. This conference is also for undergraduate and graduate students attending Asian American Native American Pacific Islander–Serving Institutions (ANNAPISIs), Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian–Serving Institutions (ANNHs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs).
On the Agenda:
Career Fair: Undergraduate and graduate students from across the country are invited to attend the career fair after the conference to network with Department of State bureau representatives and stakeholders to discover more about career opportunities and programs available to students.

Join us for a workshop where you'll learn the ins and outs of finding an internship that aligns with your career goals and academic interests. This workshop is specifically for students in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. It will be co-hosted by the staff from the Department of Economics who will share specific search strategies for ECON Students and information about their internship for credit options. All BSOS students are welcome to attend and there will be search strategies useful for all students in the college.
