Hiring: Program Assistant (International Team)

 

The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) has an immediate opening for a Program Assistant. This is a full-time, remote position, with preference for candidates in the Washington, DC area.

Job Description: The Program Assistant for the International Program at CEPR is responsible for a variety of important duties within the organization. The position plays an essential role in a number of daily tasks focused around releasing materials in English and Spanish for public or private audiences. These tasks include proofreading and formatting documents for publication, coordinating translations, disseminating CEPR materials for various audiences and assisting in research projects. For economic releases, this can include gathering and graphing economic data. The Program Assistant is responsible for a variety of operations for CEPR, including answering incoming inquiries, assisting with the planning and execution of events, and other miscellaneous tasks.

Qualifications: 

• A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) as well as an interest in economic justice.
• Excellent attention to detail, ability to handle multiple projects and coordinate workflow, ability to work independently and with a team, good written and verbal communication skills, a sense of humor, and a shared commitment to CEPR’s mission and values.
• Candidates should have some or all of the following: strong knowledge of the political landscape; experience using economic data; experience at a nonprofit, union, or similar environment with a track record of successful work; experience with publication layout/design, website content management, and email distribution programs; knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, graphing and visualization software (such as Tableau and Datawrapper) and graphing best practices; and the ability to learn new software and skills quickly.
• Experience with any of the following is not required but desirable: coalitions and coalition building, the US Congress, Photoshop or Illustrator, statistical analysis, website design and maintenance, and video and audio production/editing.
• Background in or familiarity with current events in Latin America and/or international financial institutions is a strong plus.
• Written and oral proficiency in Spanish a plus.

CSIS Economics Program Spring 2023 Internship

CSIS seeks three full-time, paid research interns to support the Economics Program. The Economics Program’s mission is to illuminate the role of economics in foreign policy and national security and to offer practical economic policy ideas to enhance U.S. and global prosperity and security. We work on the practice of economic statecraft, from trade agreements and investment treaties to financial sanctions and export controls, as well as global economic governance and the domestic foundations of U.S. economic power. Much of the Program’s work is centered on the Asia-Pacific region, with specific emphasis on U.S. economic strategy toward the region and relations with China, Japan, and other key regional players. We also work on U.S. economic cooperation with allies, including EU countries and Asian allies, with a particular focus on the intersection of international economic cooperation and technology policy. Because of the fast-paced work environment, interns should be motivated self-starters who enjoy a wide variety of analytic and logistical tasks and have strong written and oral communications skills. Interns will be part of a tight-knit and dedicated team where they will have the opportunity to make serious and substantive contributions to the work of the program, and will be paid an hourly rate.

• Conduct research across a broad topical and geographic scope.
• Daily monitoring of foreign and economic policy developments in Asia and the activities of relevant economic institutions and forums, including the G20, G7, and APEC.
• Support ongoing projects on U.S.-China relations, U.S.-Japan relations, U.S. economic strategy toward Asia, and the intersection between technology policy and economic statecraft.
• Identify, attend, and take notes on virtual internal and external events relevant to the work of the Economics Program.

Hiring Pre-Doctoral Fellows at MIT

 

Nathaniel Hendren is recruiting a Research Fellow based at MIT in Cambridge, MA to conduct economic analysis. The full-time, one year appointment is to begin July 1, 2023, renewable annually based on mutual agreement and availability of funding. An employment term of two years is strongly preferred. The Research Fellow will be part of Policy Impacts, an organization founded by Professor Hendren that is dedicated to improving the quality of government decision-making by promoting standardization in policy analysis.

The pre-doctoral fellow will work directly with Professor Hendren on research topics in applied micro economics and empirical welfare analysis. Topics likely include the welfare analysis of environmental and criminal justice policies, empirical macroeconomics, and the impact and incidence of labor market shocks. Work will involve detailed and careful coding of the welfare impacts of government policies, analysis and coding of large microdatasets, literature reviews, and advanced meta-analysis methods using Stata and GitHub. It will also build upon earlier work studying the welfare impacts of government policies and the impact of local labor markets on upward economic mobility.

The pre-doctoral position is intended to provide experiences that will be most beneficial to applicants intending to pursue graduate work in economics. The work will include in-depth exposure to a broad set of literature in economics and experience with advanced empirical and statistical methods. Pre doctoral fellows are invited to participate in broader activities at MIT, including seminars and courses, and will be connected to a broader community of pre-doctoral fellows at MIT, Blueprint Labs, and Opportunity Insights.

Qualifications and Skills

• A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in economics, computer science, mathematics, statistics, or a related field.
• Minimum 2 years’ specialized experience with quantitative data analysis, research methods, and/or social sciences research (which may include coursework or experience gained as an undergraduate).
• Programming skills, particularly around data analysis, cleaning, and simulations. Previous fellows in this position have used Stata, R, or Python to conduct analyses.
• Ability to work independently in a self-directed role across multiple projects, managers, and teams.
• Responsibility and Judgement: Deals with confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgement.

FDA Economics Internship - Spring 2023

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) invites undergraduate juniors or seniors, or master’s students majoring in Economics, Data Science, Information Systems, Public Health, or other Statistics-related fields to apply for an internship with the Economics Staff in the Office of the Commissioner. Selected interns will assist members of the Economics Staff in setting up processes to improve workflow and conducting economic analyses of major FDA policies and regulations related to food, human drugs, medical devices, biological products, tobacco products, and animal drugs and feed. 

Internships will be for at least one academic semester and require a minimum commitment of 16 hours per week. Intern positions are unpaid; however, students may be able to earn college credit. U.S. citizenship is required of all interns.

Candidates must have at least Junior Standing and have completed classes in econometrics and intermediate microeconomics, or similar classes on computational methods for data analysis, by the time of or during the internship. Competitive candidates are detail-focused, have strong communication and writing skills, and can work independently. We encourage candidates to apply who have experience with Microsoft 365, including Access, Excel, Word, and SharePoint Online; analytical software such as STATA and R; and applications such as Python.

AEA Summer Program 2023

Since 1974, the AEA Summer Program, through scholarships, has increased diversity in the field of economics by preparing talented undergraduates for doctoral programs in economics and related disciplines. The AEASP is a prestigious program that enables students to develop and solidify technical skills in preparation for the rigors of graduate studies. As many as 20% of PhDs awarded to minorities in economics over the past 20 years were graduates of the program. The program will once again be offered at Howard University in Summer 2023. All students receive 2 months of intensive training in microeconomics, mathematics, econometrics and research methods with leading faculty. The Research Coordinator for the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park works with Principal Investigators (PIs) through the development, submission, award, execution and close out of sponsored projects. The Coordinator advises faculty on all elements and procedures required for proposal preparation, development, and submission and on appropriate expenditures, award specific terms, and regulations.

The Coordinator also obtains and follows solicitation instructions for the preparation of the proposals and prepares proposal budgets, gathers information to support the proposed costs, and completes all required sponsor cost proposal forms.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Skill in planning work, ability to analyze, retain knowledge, show initiative and be resourceful in finding information pertaining to the job.

Economic Research Intern Opportunity at the Chicago Fed!

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Economic Research Summer Intern application is NOW OPEN for the Summer of 2023.

This program provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable research experience, network with peers in the field, and to work side-by-side with our economists and research assistants to support research and policy work. Interns work full time for 12 consecutive weeks and are typically asked to:

• support economists in their basic and applied research – inclusive of collecting data, conducting moderately complex statistical analysis, writing code for model estimations and organizing the presentation of results;

• assist economists with their research and analysis of public policy issues and events;

• prepare a variety of charts, tables, and descriptive text for staff economists and department management.

These internships are ideal for students looking to build their research portfolios, who have a potential interest in graduate school, or who are considering applying for the Chicago Fed’s Research Assistant program after graduation. Summer 2023 Economic Research interns are given priority consideration for 2024 RA openings providing positive recommendations regarding performance throughout their internship experience.
