Asia Institute for Political Economy Summer 2016 Opportunity to Study in Hong Kong

14th Annual Asia Institute for Political Economy (AIPE)
Hong Kong from July 9 – 30, 2016.

Based in Hong Kong, AIPE offers a unique opportunity for students from Asia and the United States to explore fundamental issues related to political economy and government and delve into serious political and economic issues facing their countries. As the financial center of Asia, as well as the location of recent pro-democracy protests, Hong Kong is the perfect setting to bring together students to discuss these topics. Students engage in a rigorous academic course and participate in stimulating lectures given by the region’s most esteemed experts. The combination of educational, cultural, and social exchange allows participants to explore challenging ideas, form life-long friendships, and form cross-border networks that will greatly benefit their educational and professional development. Upon successful completion of the program students will gain undergraduate credit from George Mason University.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the application deadline on March 1, 2016. Paid Summer Internship with New America's Open Technology Institute

New America’s Open Technology Institute seeks enthusiastic, motivated college/graduate students or individuals with equivalent experience for internships for summer 2016 in our Washington, DC office. Applicants must be passionate about tech policy and interested in learning about complex issues in a fast-paced environment. Internships are for pay unless credit is required.

Responsibilities:

§ Contribute research, writing, technical or web/software development expertise (as appropriate) to projects that may include a broad range of Internet policy issues, including but not limited to net neutrality, broadband access and adoption, cybersecurity, government surveillance, Internet governance, copyright reform, and consumer privacy;

§ Conduct in-depth research and writing on a variety of topics;

§ Identify and analyze emerging issues in tech policy;

§ Assist with administrative tasks and event staffing;

§ Other tasks as directed.

Qualified interns will have the opportunity to author or co-author blog posts, articles, research papers, or open source code. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend educational events in Washington, DC, and to accompany OTI staff members attending meetings in Congress and administrative agencies.

Paid Summer Internship in Labor Market Policy

As an intern in the labor market policy issue area, you will report directly to Ben Gitis, Director of Labor Market Policy at the American Action Forum. Gitis has extensively researched and written about the minimum wage, wage subsidies, regulatory cost burdens on businesses and workers, and the labor market consequences of the Affordable Care Act. His work has been referenced by the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Atlantic, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox Business, Bloomberg, Reuters, and others.

Labor Market Policy interns will primarily focus on policy matters related to employment, pay, and workforce training. This focus will also include efforts to better understand and communicate how national and local economic policies interact with the labor market. As part of this effort, interns will work on general macroeconomic issues.

A few examples of potential projects include:

• Research, analyze data, and draft reports on key elements of economic and labor market policy, including local minimum wage increases, union organizing trends, workforce training, and public assistance programs
• Compile, organize, and analyze labor market datasets
• Track upcoming labor laws and regulations, such as local minimum wage increases, Department of Labor rulemaking, and National Labor Relations Board decisions
• Compose issue briefs on emerging areas of labor market policy
