Law, Legal & Advocacy: Networking Night

The Law, Legal & Advocacy: Networking Night connects students with UMD alumni and employers working in a variety of career fields throughout the DC Metro area.

Strategies to Gain Admission to Highly Competitive Graduate Programs!

Location: Prince George's Room - Stamp Student Union
All class levels (freshmen- alumni) are welcome to attend and gain tips on how to excel through the graduate school application process in a variety of fields (i.e. PhD, Master’s, MBA, Law, MD, PharmD, PsyD, MFA, Postdoc). As well as learn about scholarship and fellowship options. Our guest speaker, Donald Asher, is amazing presenter and expert in the area of applying to graduate programs.  He is the author of the bestselling book, Graduate Admission Essays. Mr. Asher is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on the graduate admissions process. He is the author of twelve books, a contributing writer to the Wall Street Journal’s Career Journal (in addition to many other publications), and leads over 150 lectures a year. Come meet Aliza Licht '96 Alumna and author of this summer's bestselling book, Leave Your Mark. 
Aliza graduated from UMD with a B.S. in Biology and dreams of becoming a plastic surgeon. After she realized that she couldn't spend a life in scrubs, she decided to pursue her childhood love of fashion and started in the magazine industry....making the jump to fashion public relations in 1998 when she joined Donna Karan International Most recently the senior V.P. of global communications, in 2009, Licht took on social media on top of her traditional PR responsibilities and created “DKNY PR GIRL” (@dkny on twitter), the company's award-winning social media personality for whom she was the singular strategist and voice of. The person behind DKNY PR GIRL’s true identity was kept anonymous for two years until October 2011 when Licht revealed herself in a "behind the scenes of fashion week" video on YouTube. Her story was chronicled by The New York Times in "PR Girl Revealed As PR Executive." Licht has been widely credited as a social media pioneer in the fashion industry, building an organic community of over half a million followers from 2009-2015.

Big Data & Social Media Panel Discussion

Please mark your calendars for the second annual Big Data and Social Media panel discussion and networking event at the University of Maryland. The event will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Colony Ballroom in the Stamp Student Union. It is sponsored by University of Maryland Communication Department, the Undergraduate Communication Association (UCA), and the Communication Alumni Advisory Board. Light refreshments will be provided. Panelists will address what big data is, how professionals use social media to gather, interpret, and communicate big data, how social media analytics work, and the future outlook for social media in the communication professions.  UMD COMM Alumni Ryan Swann and Jennifer Sherman will moderate the event.  Mr. Swann is Director of Data Analytics in the GSA’s Office of Government-Wide Policy and Ms. Sherman is an Assistant Account Executive at Environics Communications.
