Job Description

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts.

JOB SUMMARY:

The CSIS Middle East Program seeks highly motivated candidates for a full-time paid, three-month internship in a dynamic and fast-paced environment beginning in mid-late September 2016.

The Middle East Program is currently undertaking work on self-determination movements in the Middle East and elsewhere; political, security, and economic trends in the Maghreb, and its interconnectivity with the global system; military conscription and national identity in the United Arab Emirates; and the long-term drivers of social and economic change in the Gulf countries.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, resumé, two letters of recommendation, and a brief (500-1000 word) writing sample. Writing samples should demonstrate the ability to research and write policy-relevant work. Letters of recommendation should be sent to middleeaststudies@csis.org. Finalists will also be asked to complete a trial assignment assessing their research and writing ability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Interns have substantive responsibilities. Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Compiling research briefs and literature reviews for senior fellows 
  • Briefing the program director weekly 
  • Attending events and writing event summaries 
  • Drafting and editing articles for the Middle East Program’s monthly newsletter 
  • Assisting with program events and some administrative tasks 

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of a 3.5 GPA on a U.S. scale or equivalent 
  • Strong demonstrated interest in and knowledge of the Middle East 
  • Demonstrated research skills 
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills 
  • Zest for challenging assignments that demand creativity 
  • Arabic and/or French language skills are strongly preferred
