In 2010, the African Union (AU) launched the African Women’s Decade (AWD) 2010 – 2020. The objective of the AWD is to advance gender equality by accelerating the AU Member States’ implementation of global and regional commitments on women’s empowerment and gender equality.
Since the launch of the decade, Make Every Woman Count (MEWC) has been producing a yearly report, which summarises the progress made by African countries regarding women's rights and gender equality on the continent during each year of the African Women's Decade 2010-2020
MEWC aim to produce a final report in 2020 that will present an analysis of the progress/gaps made in terms of securing, realizing, and extending the rights for African women and girls during the 10 years of the AWD. It will also highlight trends, challenges, best practices and areas of contention, and make recommendations for the African Union Members States in the advancement of the women’s rights agenda going forward.
MEWC is looking for interns/volunteers to assist with the research, data collection, track and report on progress African countries are making in the area of women’s rights and gender equality.
This is a largely desk related research, utilising credible sources including UN as well as national reports, policies, laws. This is a very rewarding experience to be involved in research, writing and analysis, monitoring women's rights in Africa during the African Women's Decade.
Interns/Volunteers DutiesSpecific internship/volunteers’ duties include, but are not limited to:
- Research, data collection
- Assist with the preparation and publication of the African Women’s Decade monitoring report 2020;
- Track and report on progress African countries are making in the area of women’s human rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment;
- Conduct a comprehensive desk review and analysis of the status and implementation of laws and policies and practices on women’s rights in Africa
- Highly motivated with a strong interest or background on women related issues or studies/work in Africa
- Possess strong research and writing skills
- Proven working experience on issues related to gender and research
- Previous experience in desk and/or literature reviews on gender, development, human rights or any related area;
- Excellent ability to work independently;
- Capacity to analyse complex data and information and present it in an effective and concise way;
- Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and work with people from the different cultural background;
- Be good at writing, proofreading and have strong analytical skills;
- Excellent ability to read, analyse and write documents, articles, etc.
- Good problem-solving and interpersonal skills;
- Able to meet tight deadlines
This internship is unpaid and home-based (which makes it quite flexible as you can work from anywhere around the world).
