Research Programmer, Center on Social Dynamics & Policy

Join the team at the Brookings Institution’s Economic Studies program (ES), and work with experts as they focus on addressing obstacles to long-term economic growth and opportunity. This is a great opportunity for someone with an interest in developing simulation models of social and (occasionally) biological systems that can help inform policy decisions. The Research Programmer is responsible for agent-based model implementation and/or manipulation, output presentation; topics vary and include: public health, education, economics, and behavioral/social sciences. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with advanced mathematical and statistical concepts that can be used to characterize elements of these systems, and an ability to quickly become adept at working in new software environments and with existing code.

Responsibilities:
70% Programming Simulation and Statistical Assistance
• Assists in the design of agent-based models
• Takes primary responsibility for development of agent-based models
• Interfaces with external research partners to obtain, process, and convert outside data into forms suitable for integration in agent-based models
• Sweep model parameter spaces; analyze agent-based model outputs
• Manipulation and/or extension of agent-based models

30% Visualization and Reports
• Converts agent-based model outputs to viewable form for analyses and presentations
• Assists in drafting written reports and online profiles for funders and external research partners describing model design, implementation, and results
• Works with the scholar to create PowerPoint presentations for use in summarizing research findings to outside audiences
• Assists in preparation and revision of manuscripts and proposals

The Social Security Advisory Board (board) is a bipartisan, independent federal government agency established in the Social Security Independence and Program Improvements Act of 1994 to advise the president, the Congress, and the Commissioner of Social Security on matters of policy and administration of the Old-Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income programs. Members of the board are appointed by the president, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. The board maintains a small professional staff of policy advisors and analysts.

Overview
The board is seeking a communications intern for the spring 2018 semester. The internship is a paid opportunity for undergraduate students in their junior year or senior year.

The internship will pay a total stipend of $2,400, and applicants must be willing to commit to working 16 hours per week. The internship will last approximately 10 weeks. The board will offer flexibility around an academic course schedule.

Responsibilities
The communications intern will support the work of the policy analyst and other staff members as assigned.

Duties include developing and updating media lists; analyzing media coverage; researching stakeholders; conducting competitive analyses of the market for ideas; providing support as needed, in drafting website content and social media content; copy editing various external documents; assisting the planning of internal and external events; and completing other duties as assigned.
The intern will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, Congressional hearings, and local policy events.

2018 OUTSTANDING ADVISING AND ADMINISTRATION AWARDS - submissions due on March 13, 2018.
These awards recognize the important contributions of faculty and staff who serve as advisors as well as academic or adiminstrative leaders in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. These awards acknowledge their effort in advancing educational opportunities or enhancing the experiences and outcomes of our students. 
Two awards of $1,000 will be presented at the College’s Faculty Staff Recognition Reception.  Ideally, one award will honor a colleague working primarily with undergraduate students and one with graduate students. 
Tenured/tenure-track faculty, professional-track faculty, and staff are all eligible except those who have received the award in the past 10 academic years.

To nominate a person for the award, submit letters of recommendation to www.bsosawards.umd.edu.  Nominators are encouraged to solicit letters from others who are familiar with the nominee’s work. Student nominators are encouraged to describe how the advisor has assisted them both academically and personally and why she/he merits special recognition. The College does not narrowly define the criteria for this award. Rather, the nominator determines the attributes and behaviors that she/he believes constitute consistently excellent advising or administration.  Examples of attributes that nominators may want to consider include (but are not limited to) the following: accessibility, dedication, problem-solving skills, dependability, communication skills, motivation/attitude, knowledge/skills and innovation.

As the nation’s first living-learning entrepreneurship experience, the Hinman CEOs Program selects entrepreneurially-minded students from all academic disciplines to join a unique community to explore and practice innovation. Students live together, learn about entrepreneurship, and can launch new ventures. The mission of the Hinman CEOs Program is to foster an entrepreneurial spirit, create a sense of community and cooperation, and develop ethical leaders.

Apply for the Global Terrorism Minor


The undergraduate minor in Global Terrorism is a cross-disciplinary program housed in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland.The minor is designed to train the next generation of terrorism analysts, including students who plan to pursue graduate study related to terrorism as well as employment in the federal, state, local, non-profit, and/or private sectors. The program is part of the University of Maryland’s Global Studies program, alongside the minors in International Development and Conflict ManagementGlobal Poverty, and International Engineering.

Winter/Spring 2018 Research Internship

The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), a premier trade association located in Washington, D.C., is seeking a paid intern to assist the Transportation Investment Advocacy Center™ (TIAC) and Economics teams with primary research, writing and data work during the winter/spring 2018 semester.

We are seeking applicants that:

  • Are policy-oriented, preferably with experience researching transportation policy

JOB DESCRIPTION 
EXIM’s Office of Policy Analysis and International Relations (OPAIR) is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic student intern for the Spring 2018 semester. This unpaid internship offers an opportunity for students to learn about export finance, both in the United States and abroad. The internship will be conducted in OPAIR’s International Relations Division and focuses on the activities of foreign export credit agencies of OECD member countries.

Primary responsibilities include:
• Providing statistical support for EXIM’s annual Competitiveness Report to Congress and other reporting efforts. Advanced Excel skills are highly preferred.
• Conducting open-source research of foreign export finance programs and activity to inform international negotiations on export credits
• Presenting research findings to OPAIR staff and other senior leaders

Interns are also invited to participate in meetings with other EXIM Bank divisions, other federal agencies, and EXIM’s global counterparts. Students should be currently enrolled.
