Job Summary

Conducts statistical and economic analyses of current macroeconomic, microeconomic, financial and regional data, and provides research support for the economists. May evaluate possible competitive effects of complex Bank Holding Company (BHC) acquisitions and bank merger applications, and respond to requests for data related to the banking markets. The level of work required is considered entry- level and staff work under direct supervision. This job has no direct reports.

Responsibilities:

· Supports the economists in their basic and applied research by following instructions to perform tasks including collecting data, conducting moderately complex statistical analysis, writing statistical software programs, and organizing the presentation of results

· Assists the economists in the analysis of public policy issues and events. Issues include monetary policy, bank regulation, payments systems, financial markets, community development and the state of the US and global economies

· Researches economic topics for economists' articles; on some of these occasions, the Associate Economist’s efforts will be substantial enough to constitute collaboration with the economists (or department management), leading to jointly authored articles

Previously he worked at Rydex Investments in shareholder services, financial advisor sales, and product development and distribution. He has a special focus on registered investment advisors, which hold to a fiduciary standard rather than a suitability standard. He earned a BA in economics, and his firm regularly hires summer interns. He would like to see a fellow Terp in Chicago soon!

The American Economic Association (AEA) is pleased to announce they are now accepting applications for their Summer Training & Minority Fellowship program for Summer 2015. This intensive six-week experience is hosted by the Department of Economics and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy at the University of New Mexico.

It is more than a one-time, six-week experience. Students form supportive teams and create a network of future professional contacts. Faculty and AEA leaders engage with students in a mentorship role. They often provide letters of recommendation, contact schools on behalf of prospective students, review application statements and advise on research topics. Their support often endures for many years beyond the program.

The program is structured to strengthen students’ math skills, foster an understanding of micro- and -macro economic principles, and explore the many research and career opportunities available to economics scholars. Individual assessments will be made during orientation which will provide each student with a personal study plan.

Primary consideration for acceptance into this program will be given to students who will begin their Junior or Senior year in Fall 2015 and plan to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics.

The Minority Fellowships are open to qualified U.S. citizens and permanent residents, with a preference for those who are members of historically disadvantaged racial or ethnic minority groups and who advance the diversity of the economics profession.

Career Fair with the USPS Office of Inspector General 11/7

Paid Summer Internship with the Joint Program in Survey Methodology

The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) at the University of Maryland is pleased to offer a 10 week summer internship to rising juniors and seniors with an interest in survey methodology and the Federal Statistical System.

Each summer JPSM sponsors a Junior Fellows Program for a limited number of undergraduate students. Successful applicants are granted paid research assistantships in a Federal statistical agency in the Washington, DC area. They participate in weekly seminars at JPSM and elsewhere in the area on survey methodology and career options in survey research. Throughout the summer students learn about surveys, statistics, graduate studies, and how government agencies work.This internship will let you learn how data gathered from households and economic units are used to track and identify trends.

You will work on key indicators of unemployment, crime, consumer prices, population migration and growth, agricultural production, educational performance of young people, transportation trends, or a host of other topics. A salary of $4,500-$5,000 for 10 weeks and apartment style dormitory
housing will be provided.

Applicants for the Junior Fellow positions should submit a personal statement of no more than one page (500 words), academic transcript, and one faculty recommendation. The application process opens October 1, 2014 and ends December 31, 2014.

Spring Internship Opportunity - Economic Development Administration (EDA)

The Economic Development Administration (EDA), U.S. Department of Commerce, is seeking applicants for their internship program. Two-Year Undergraduate Scholarship on Countering Violent Extremism

Are you a UMD Sophomore? Are you interested in understanding more about what can be done to curb terrorism before radicalization occurs? Would you like to work and research with leading experts in the field of radicalization and countering violent extremism while earning a full tuition scholarship and living stipend? Consider applying for The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START)’s Countering Violent Extremism Fellowship this fall!

As a part of this program you will receive:
·         A full tuition scholarship for five semesters, two summer courses, and one winter course,
·         A monthly living stipend for two-and-a-half years, and,
·         A travel and living stipend for two summers of research—one in Chicago and one in Dubai.
