Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program - Application deadline extended to Friday, April 17th!

The Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program honors the legacy of Howard Peters "Pete" Rawlings, who was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates representing the 40th district for more than two decades. A tireless advocate for those often unheard and underrepresented, the Rawlings Program provides you the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Delegate Rawlings and develop as a champion for those marginalized in leadership and decision-making processes.

Working with faculty, alumni and local leaders, you will develop the skills and resources to take on leadership roles during the program and beyond, and understand the importance of cultural pluralism and advocacy to elevate unheard voices. The Program combines mentorship, engagements with expert faculty and public leaders, and hands-on experiences working in the community to realize your commitment to develop as an ethical leader.

WE ARE MOVING TO THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES DRUM (DIGITAL REPOSITORY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND) PLATFORM FOR 2020

To comply with University-wide guidance about minimizing large-gathering infectious disease risks for our students, faculty, and staff, we are moving this year's Undergraduate Research Day poster exhibition to the DRUM (Digital Repository at the University of Maryland) online platform. **We will not host our traditional in-person event at the Stamp Grand Ballroom this year, but will return to this venue in 2021.**

A service of the University of Maryland University Libraries, DRUM collects, preserves, and provides public access to the scholarly output of the university. Faculty and student researchers can upload research products for rapid dissemination, global visibility and impact, and long-term preservation.

DEADLINE: The deadline to submit a poster proposal for this year's DRUM-based Undergraduate Research Day is extended to Friday, April 17, 2020. Submitting a poster proposal is free and easy - just use the online registration system on the MCUR website at http://www.ugresearch.umd.edu/current-ugresearchday.html

Economics Internship at the Food and Drug Administration

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) invites undergraduate juniors or seniors, or master’s students majoring in Economics, Public Health, or other Statistics-related field to apply for an internship program with the Economics Staff in the Office of the Commissioner. The intern will assist members of the Economics Staff in conducting economic analyses of major FDA policies and regulations related to food, human drugs, medical devices, biological products, tobacco products, and animal drugs and feed.

Internships will be for one academic semester and require a minimum commitment of 16 hours per week. Intern positions are unpaid; however, students may be able to earn college credit. U.S. citizenship is required.

Candidates are required to have completed classes in intermediate microeconomics and econometrics (or a similar class on computational methods for data analysis). Candidates should be detail focused, have strong communication and writing skills, and be able to work independently. Candidates with experience in statistical packages such as Microsoft Excel, STATA, R, or Python are encouraged to apply.

Call for 2020 Applications for Junior Stanley Surrey Fellowship

Office of Tax Analysis Research Assistant Position (Junior Stanley Surrey Fellowship)

The Office of Tax Analysis (OTA) performs expert economic analysis of existing and proposed Federal tax policies for the Secretary of the Treasury, the President, the Congress, and the public. OTA advises in the formulation of Administration tax proposals, assesses major Congressional tax proposals, and assists in the implementation of enacted tax legislation. OTA's analyses are provided in various forms, including background papers, position papers, policy memoranda, briefings for policy makers, Congressional testimony, estimates of receipts for the Budget and for Treasury cash management decisions, estimates of revenue and distributional effects of proposed legislation, participation in regulatory guidance projects, and contributions to the negotiation of international tax treaties and agreements. To accomplish its mission, OTA conducts research to develop conceptual frameworks, models, data, methodologies, and empirical results to provide the foundations for its economic analysis of tax policies.

The purpose of this position is to serve in the Office of Tax Analysis as a Financial Economist, planning and performing a wide range of professional economic research and analysis. Specific duties may vary based on the skills and experience of the applicant. The incumbent researches and assembles facts and prepares economic analyses that relate to the development and review of Federal tax policy. The incumbent uses experience and initiative to identify issues and concerns requiring further study and, with supervisory approval, plans, conducts, and implements research projects in furtherance of the Office's mission. The incumbent assists with the dissemination of Office research by tracking research projects, organizing meetings, and maintaining the office web site.

The position is a two year appointment that may be extended for an additional two years. The position is full-time, full-year paid at the General Schedule grade 7, 9 or 11, depending on the education and experience of the candidate. U.S. Citizenship and at least 24 hours of credit in economics courses are required.

World Wildlife Fund - Climate Adaptation Intern

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's leading conservation organization, seeks a Climate Adaptation Intern to support WWF Climate Crowd, a crowdsourcing initiative that convenes and supports a network of partners to gather data on how climate change is impacting people and nature, and supports on-the-ground projects that help rural communities adapt while reducing pressure on biodiversity.

Responsibilities will include:
1) conducting qualitative data analysis of Climate Crowd interviews;
2) reviewing scientific literature to complement results of data analysis;
3) compiling two-page summary reports highlighting the primary impacts on livelihoods, coping responses, and impacts to biodiversity;
4) assisting with various communications including content for newsletters, web stories, etc.

Other responsibilities will be assigned on an as-needed basis.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Minimum of 20 hours per week
  • Knowledge of climate change, international development and/or ecology
  • Excellent research, writing and analytical skills
  • Attention to detail is a must
  • Proficient in Excel
  • Basic knowledge of data analysis techniques
  • Knowledge of Spanish a plus, but not required
  • Compensation:
  • Unpaid. For all unpaid internships, applicants must be enrolled in school and be able to obtain academic course credit from their university.
How to apply: 

Summer Internship - Performance and Evaluation Assistant

The Performance and Evaluation Assistant is three-month internship from June through August offered at the Urban Teachers National Team. The ideal candidate is collaborative, motivated, curious, and interested in learning more about how to use program data to inform decision making at a growing national nonprofit. Candidates should be comfortable using a variety of data tools to answer questions. With the support of the Performance and Evaluation (P&E) Team at Urban Teachers National, your work will be project based and involve the responsibilities detailed below.

Target Start Date: June 2020
Location: Baltimore, MD (must be able to travel to our office in southwest Baltimore at least three days per week, including Thursdays)
Duration: about 3 months (~8hr/day 5 days/week).

Responsibilities
  • Complete the following projects over the course of the internship and deliver updates and/or presentations to key internal stakeholders:
  • Codebook creation to help the P&E and Technology Teams better understand the breadth of the data we collect and which variables we should use in our analyses.
  • Source publicly available data necessary for contextualize program data at the district and school level for each of our sites; analyze this data, and present to key internal stakeholders such as Site Teams and the Development Team.
  • Download, clean, and merge data from multiple sources to analyze trends and report out on findings.
