BSOS Experience Funds Applications Still Open


Do you have an unpaid internship, research opportunity, or have a professional conference coming up you would like to attend? If you are a BSOS student with financial need that is preventing you from taking advantage of an experiential learning opportunity, apply for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds

Apply by February 7, 2025 for best consideration. Applications will be accepted after that day pending available funds.

BSOS Experience Fund Applications are Still Open for Spring 2024

 Apply today for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds!

 **Funds are still available for ECON majors for Spring 2024**

These funds assist undergraduate BSOS majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom, such as unpaid internships, research, service-learning, and professional or academic virtual conferences. The funds are intended to help offset expenses related to such activities including, but not limited to:
  • travel/transportation expense
  • professional attire
  • software/technology, material needs, not provided by employer/University, but essential to the experience.
  • conference fees
  • opportunity costs, (i.e. the need to give up a part-time paid job in order to take an unpaid internship.)
This year there are three awards specifically for ECON majors:
  • The Gary L. Rozier Professional Experience Fellowships for Economics Majors
  • The Peggy Rae and John Sapienza Scholarship Fund
  • The Robert R. Satterfield Economics Student Opportunities Endowed Funds
If you are an ECON student with financial need that is preventing you from taking advantage of an unpaid opportunity, we encourage you to apply for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds.

Real Talk: Being Queer & Your Career

                                
the UMD Community for a panel event and networking opportunity as we go beyond the surface of what it means to be an LGBTQ+ professional.

Panelists will engage in discussion around their experiences being out at work, including conversations around the benefits and limitations experienced by sharing identity in the workplace. Panelists will join us from a variety of settings, including higher education, STEM, consulting, and advocacy-based industries, among others. The second part of this program will also allow for panelists and participants to network and continue conversations around these important topics. Join Career Services professionals, LGBTQ+ professionals, students, and others in the UMD community as we address these important topics related to being out at work.

Federal Reserve Board and Federal Reserve Education (FRE) will welcome students nationwide via webcast to discuss career opportunities and diversity in economics and to learn about career paths within the Federal Reserve System. The event takes place beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET on April 4, 2023.

Invitation to the Sadie TM Alexander Conference for Economics and Related Fields

The Sadie Collective will host the fifth annual Sadie T.M. Alexander Conference for Economics and Related Fields (SACE) on February 16-18, 2023 in a hybrid format. The overarching theme of SACE 2023 will be: Looking Forward: Our Increasingly Digital World. 


All tickets are inclusive of:
  • State of the art conference experience, allowing camaraderie, learning, and engagement with Black women economists on the future of the economy
  • Access to our annual research reception and awards night celebrating the work of Black women scholars who are economists and economists-in-training.
  • Access to a professional development workshop and a career fair prep workshop
  • Access to our career opportunities fair featuring a range of 30 organizations that hire economists, data analysts, and researchers. This includes private appointments with recruiters of interest.
  • Access to Sadie Collective swag and useful resources for your career growth including the Sadie Collective membership portal
  • Access to live financial literacy workshops curated for Black women
  • An experienced mentor you are paired with and get to meet during the conference. 
This series of events, hosted over Black History Month, will convene a wide range of attendees, from undergraduate students to prominent Black women across economics, business, technology, healthcare, and policy. The conference will feature exciting speakers such as Dr. Lisa Cook, the first Black woman to sit on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, among others.

Workshop: Learn Some tips for Interviewing

Learn some tips for interviewing and have a chance to practice the techniques in this workshop co-sponsored by USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and UMD’s Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS).

All majors are welcome! We will begin with some overview information and best practices for answering behavioral-based interview questions, and then break into small groups so you can practice with feedback from professionals.

Join the Director of Admissions at Maryland Carey Law for a discussion about the law school application process. We will discuss how to best position yourself to apply to law school, go over each component of the application, and provide tips as to what admissions committees look for when reviewing applications. CBE Webinar Series: Economics Careers in Finance

NABE and the CBE Steering Committee are pleased to announce a new webinar series highlighting the many career prospects a degree in economics provides today’s graduates. Join us as we meet with leading economists in entertainment, finance, manufacturing, government, healthcare, energy, housing, consulting, and human resources representatives from the top firms.

The series continues on November 10 with Economics Careers in Entertainment, where participants will hear about careers at Citi, Fidelity Investments, The Conference Board, and Wells Fargo. International Relations is a broad field that entails jobs focused on how nations and cultures interact and the effect that interaction has on economics, political science, health, education, and society as a whole. Our panelist will share their career paths, past educational experiences that helped them succeed, and provide tips for entering the field.

This event is open to all majors, but the discussion will be especially helpful for students in the social sciences. Students will have the option to submit questions through the chat feature during the session. Students usually ask questions about their background, classes that were helpful, application tips, etc.

This year’s theme is Presente: Latinos Leading the Way.
