The positions are full-time, salaried, and offer full benefits, including tuition assistance. Thank you for distributing this information to graduating students in your department to alert them of these openings.

The Federal Reserve System is committed to attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse workforce. We recognize the benefit derived from different perspectives and experiences and we look carefully at candidates’ applications to identify individuals whose perspectives could benefit our work. Research Assistants work closely with economists at the top of their fields on a variety of research questions and real-world policy issues while developing a toolkit beneficial for graduate study and future career paths. Research Assistants typically work for two to three years, before going on to competitive graduate programs or pursuing other careers.

We seek individuals with strong academic records and excellent written and oral communication skills. Competitive candidates should have intermediate coursework in economics and a strong foundation in mathematics and statistics. We also look for prior research experience, demonstrated interest in economics, programming experience, and familiarity with statistical programming packages, such as STATA, MATLAB, and R. Most positions require US citizenship, but some Reserve Banks consider non-U.S. citizen candidates.

Interested students will find general information about our Research Assistant program at www.fedeconjobs.org. Apply for the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of International Affairs Junior Fellows Program

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of International Affairs (IA) seeks outstanding new college graduates to help advance IA’s mission to support U.S. economic prosperity by strengthening the global economy, preventing and mitigating international financial instability, and tackling existing and newly evolving global challenges.

About the Program:

The Junior Fellowship program is a highly selective, fixed two-year program for new college graduates to work shaping international economic policy for the United States. Most fellows leave the program to pursue graduate degrees (e.g. law, public policy, international relations, and finance and business) or opportunities in the U.S. government or with other organizations. Junior Fellows have a wide range of responsibilities, providing them with exposure to multiple policy issues and
opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills. They typically perform a variety of tasks that include developing policy proposals, analyzing international economic and financial developments, providing administrative support, and conducting analytical studies. Fellows also prepare briefings materials and help coordinate bilateral and multilateral meetings for senior Treasury officials to engage with counterparts at international financial institutions like the IMF, Word Bank, and global fora like the G7 and G20. Junior fellows often participate in such meetings, including with finance ministers, central bankers, and other global financial leaders, and may have opportunities to travel abroad.

Junior Fellows will be placed in either a regional or functional office. Regional offices oversee Treasury’s engagement with counterparts across the world. Functional offices oversee Treasury’s engagement with international financial intuitions and structure broader Treasury policy on issues ranging from climate change, to export credits, to foreign exchange. Positions are usually filled at the GS-9 level.

Qualifications:

Strong candidates will have recently received – or will soon receive – a bachelor’s degree with relevant coursework in economics, public policy, finance, or international relations. However, a major or concentration in these fields is not necessary for consideration. IA is committed to attracting and developing a diverse and inclusive workforce. We recognize that different perspectives and experiences among our employees are workforce strengths, and holistically evaluate each candidate’s basis of public policy motivation, academic achievement, ability to bring perspectives that could benefit our work, and professional recommendations. As such, we especially encourage submissions from groups traditionally less represented in economics.

How to Apply:

Interested candidates should email a cover letter, resume, transcript(s), and two recommendations attesting to academic qualifications and career potential to IAFellows@treasury.gov by October 30, 2020. In the email, candidates should (A) indicate a desired start date; (B) confirm they hold U.S. citizenship (must be able to provide documentation); (C) note veterans’ preference, if applicable; and (D) a resume that demonstrates 52 weeks (2,080 hours) of paid or unpaid experience relevant to the duties described above.

Call for Pepsi Proposals for Spring 2021 Programs

Each semester the Review Committee for the Pepsi Enhancement Fund sends out a call for proposals for program funding. At this time, we encourage you to submit proposals for the Spring 2021 term. The programs and events must occur during January 25 - May 11, 2021.

A $50,000 fund, generously provided by PepsiCo, will be used to underwrite the cost of programs that broadly affect the campus population. For Fall 2020, we received 69 proposals, and we were able to award 58 grants. Some of the programs receiving funding include Womxn in Symposium, Kidney Disease Screening Event, Careers in Communication, Technica Hacks, Mental Health Awareness Week, and Dorm Room Decorating with Studio A.

Each of the proposals will be measured by the following criteria:

1. Will the event/program contribute to the creation of campus community?

2. Will the event/program appeal to a wide audience of campus citizens?

3. Will the event/program contribute to the advancement of the academic mission of the University?

4. Will the event/program enhance the co-curriculum, enlarging opportunities for leadership, cultural and social exchange, and service to the University and broader community?

Submit your proposal online at https://stampunion.umd.edu/pepsi/ prior to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2020. All proposals must be completed online and a response is required to all of the questions detailed on the form. The Pepsi Review Committee will review all proposals by the end of October. Departments and organizations receiving funds will be notified following the Review Committee meeting and the funds will be available at the start of the spring semester. Please note, in order to accommodate the greatest number of groups in our funding process, a sponsoring organization may not submit more than two (2) proposals per semester. For more information on the Pepsi Enhancement Fund and a list of FAQs, please visit this webpage. Thank you, in advance, for submitting your proposal for Pepsi Enhancement Funds. Should you have any questions, please contact Dr. Donna Lim at dylim@umd.edu or at 301-314-8491.

ECON Does What?! Andrew Olinger, Budget Analyst at Ohio State Athletics

ECON Alumni Career Profile

Budget Analyst

What do you enjoy most about your current position?
I enjoy using critical thinking skills every day and it never gets boring. We always have new issues or challenges to solve. In the current financial climate it is a constant challenge to try to improve efficiencies while trying to maximize every dollar we have to maintain or improve the student-athlete experience.

What is a typical day like in your position?
There are no two days the same in intercollegiate athletics. I work heavily in excel fine-tuning the year-end financial projection to help management make informed decisions. I also try to find more efficient ways to quickly prepare and analyze our monthly financial statements and various other reports for the department.

Which undergraduate experiences (i.e. internships, on-campus leadership, living learning communities, faculty member, etc.) did you find most helpful in preparing you for your current position?
Internships provided me with the practical experience to be able to apply skills I learned in the classroom and apply them in the real world. I developed numerous connections I still have today which have helped me tremendously in my current job. My involvement in club sports was another aspect of my undergraduate experience I found helpful to prepare me for my current position. It allows you and your classmates to make decisions and plan at a micro level. I had to develop budgets and a financial plan on a micro level in a controlled environment, something I do on a daily basis today.

How has your coursework helped you in your current position (i.e. quantitative skills, research techniques, communication skills)?
The coursework I took while in school helped me to develop my critical thinking and analytical skills. My courses taught me a different ways to analyze and solve problems. In an office where most have traditional business degrees it helps to come at problems from a different angle.

Any job or internship advice for students seeking a position in your field?
In my field of Intercollegiate Athletics it is important to amass as much experience as possible. I tried to find what I wanted to do by having internships in the Marketing, Ticketing, and Operations (Women’s Basketball) department. Through these experiences I found what I liked and didn’t like and determined the business office was where I wanted to be in an Athletics Department. An added bonus of working in various areas before finding my passion is I now have a better understanding of how those departments work within the entire operation.

Anything else you want to share with undergraduates?
Take time to network in your industry as it will be immensely helpful in your career. My networking throughout graduate school helped me get numerous interviews and although the job I got was not from a networking contact they have all been immensely helpful. I have been able to use my contacts to learn how other universities operate in our industry and implement them in my current role.

Seniors! Apply Now for this Two-Year Research Assistantship at the Chicago Federal Reserve Starting Summer 2021

The research department at the Chicago Fed is looking to hire a number of research assistants to start in the summer of 2021. This position is structured as a rigorous two-year research assistantship meant to provide empirical and theoretical skills in preparation for graduate school. Most of our RAs enroll in a graduate program upon departure from the Fed.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is committed to attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse workforce. We recognize the benefit derived from different perspectives and experiences, and we look carefully at candidates’ records to identify individuals whose perspectives could benefit our work. As such, we especially encourage submissions from groups traditionally less represented in economics.

What were you expecting or hoping to do after graduation as an undergraduate?
I was expecting to work in finance as soon as I graduated. I had interned at Smith Barney and moved to New York to start working there full-time. This was in 2008.

What actually happened?
That job fell through, so I set up interviews and I networked, but no one was hiring. I found one contingency job at Goldman Sachs, but it wasn’t a finance position. I was coordinating events, setting up conferences, making copies, etc. One of my co-workers set me up for a permanent position… and then there was a hiring freeze. I actually got to the final round at Oppenheimer for an entry level position but they hired someone who already had 10 years of experience. I wasn’t expecting to compete with someone in the field for that kind of position, but that was common back then. People who had been laid off work willing to take entry-level positions and someone who had just graduated couldn’t compete with that.

Intern for a Day: Fall 2020 Edition

The University Career Center's popular Intern for a Day program has historically connected UMD students with alumni, parents, and employers for in-person job shadowing experiences to explore potential career fields.

For the fall 2020 semester, we are offering Intern for a Day Lite which will match UMD students with professionals working in a field of interest to conduct virtual informational interviews.  "Hosts" can live and work anywhere nationally and internationally.  This reimagined program takes the “cold calling” out of informational interviews and networking for students!

How it Works:

Host registration is currently open until Friday, September 25, 2020.  We will post the host list on this website by Friday, October 2, 2020.

Students will complete a mandatory 20-minute online orientation to prepare them for the informational interview. Students can complete this orientation anytime between Monday, October 5 through Sunday, October 11 and a direct link to the orientation will be provided on this website when it becomes available.

Students who completed the mandatory orientation will receive a link to the Intern for a Day Lite application on Monday, October 12, 2020.  In that application, students will be able to rank order their top "hosts" of interest.  Applications will be due by Sunday, October 18, 2020.

Staff from the University Career Center will conduct the matching process and hope to have matches out to students and hosts by the end of October!

Most questions about how the program works will be addressed in the mandatory online orientation.  Any other questions can be directed to ifad@umd.edu.
