Research Associate Position with CADRE for Students Graduating in Dec 2015 or May/Aug 2016


Key Activities Include:
·         Assisting Ph.D. economists and data scientists on academic research projects, data exploration and modeling, and algorithm development.
·         Gathering and analyzing data, programming economic models and analytical algorithms, and preparing data visualizations.
·         Investigate, profile, and test new technologies for high performance computing which enable large-scale, time-efficient modeling and analysis.
·         Participate in applying data mining and modeling approaches to operational activities.

These are excellent positions for someone considering a Ph.D. in economics.  Research Associates develop technical skills and are exposed to a broad range of economic research topics.  Most Research Associates stay with the department for two to three years, at which point many return to graduate school.  In recent years, Research Associates have gone on to Ph.D. programs at Stanford University, University of Chicago, New York University, University of Minnesota, Boston College, and Johns Hopkins University.

Required Education and Skills:
·         Bachelor’s or master’s degree in economics or closely related field, or a quantitative degree such as statistics, computer science, or mathematics.
·         Strong academic record.
·         High proficiency with personal computers, Unix/Linux experience preferred, and at least one programming language.
·         Excellent communication and presentation skills.
·         Coursework or experience in econometrics, math, statistics, statistical software packages, and machine learning is highly desirable.

Spring 2016 Internship with the Food and Drug Administration

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) invites undergraduates to apply for an internship program in economics. Internships will be for one academic semester; interns will be expected to work two days per week during most of the semester. The program is year round, with internship terms corresponding to fall, spring, and summer semesters. The intern will work with the Economics Staff in the Office of the Commissioner. The intern will assist members of the Economics Staff in conducting economic analyses of major FDA policies and regulations having to do with human drugs, medical devices, biological products, tobacco products, and animal drugs and feed. The intern will report to the Director of the Economics Staff. The qualifications include meeting the University’s requirements for an internship; at least 6 completed semester classes in economics, which must include a class in intermediate microeconomics; and a class in econometrics or computer methods of data analysis. We encourage students to apply 6 to 8 weeks before the beginning of a semester.

Spring Internship Opportunities with the Economic Development Administration

We are seeking applicants for our internship program at the Economic Development Administration (EDA), U.S. Department of Commerce. EDA’s mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy. EDA drives collaborative regional economic development initiatives that lead to job creation.

Senior Research Assistant with The Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy

BASIC FUNCTION

The Senior Research Assistant/Analyst undertakes joint research assignments with senior fellows, primarily on the federal budget, the deficit, and related legislative and policy options, as well as various other current issues in fiscal and monetary policy and health economics. Communicate with outside and inside authors; assist with events. Title and salary will be based on qualifications and experience.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in economics, mathematics, public policy or a social science with a minor in economics required. Master’s degree in a similar field preferred, but not required. Minimum one year of work experience in economics and/or computer modeling required. Competence to undertake research assignments with little supervision.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Familiarity with federal budget issues and/or issues related to health economics, and relevant data sources and literature strongly preferred. Basic knowledge of software packages such as Word and Excel. Experience with software such as SAS, STATA, and other econometric packages required. Experience handling large data sets and models preferred. Experience with web coding/scripting (such as Javascript, HTML, and CSS), and database management (such as SQL, Microsoft Access, etc.) preferred. Independent research experience preferred.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
50% Research Analysis
·         Provide analytical reviews and summaries of existing literature pertinent to assigned topic.
·         Collect and organize data and documents from various sources including electronic databases, libraries, and government documents.
·         Analyze data, using spreadsheets and statistical packages. Produce charts and tables containing the results.
40% Writing and Editing
·         Co-author papers and blog posts with senior research staff.
·         Develop detailed outlines and first drafts of papers or sections of papers and work closely with senior research staff through the publication process.
·         Help adapt papers to reach various audiences through summaries, blog posts, data visualization, and other methods.
10% Administrative Support
·         Assist Hutchins Center leadership with day-to-day activities of the Center, including research, policy, outreach, scheduling, and other activities as assigned.
·         Assist with Hutchins Center events as needed, including meeting preparation, calendar support, and logistics for public events, private roundtables, and additional activities.

·         Other duties as assigned.

NEW ACES Cybersecurity Minor for Fall 2016

The ACES Minor takes a multidisciplinary approach to cybersecurity in which students gain knowledge about many of the fields (criminal justice, business, public policy) that intersect in cybersecurity. With an emphasis on hands-on experiences, students will gain practical skills through coursework, seminars, group projects, internships, and research, both on and off campus. Students will also have the opportunity to participate with students in the ACES Living-Learning Program as peer mentors, tutors, and advisors. The minor program will also include regular interactions with corporate and governmental leaders in cybersecurity, who will serve as both mentors and professional contacts.
