"The Visible Hand" is Cornell's premier undergraduate economics journal run fully by students. We aim to cover a wide range of economic issues and try to keep the focus of each journal relevant to the contemporary issues in economics throughout the semester of publication. We are distributed in print across the Cornell Campus and are available online in pdf format via the Cornell Economics Society website (http://www.rso.cornell.edu/ces/publications.html). Community Food Assessment Intern with University of Maryland Extension

Description: Two interns are needed to aid the University of Maryland Extension and the Prince George’s County Planning Department in conducting a food assessment in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Responsibilities will include conducting a market basket survey to compare prices on staple food items at various grocery stores around the county; collecting and confirming data on the Prince George’s County food system including sites for food production, processing, packing, storage, transportation, distribution, consumption, and waste management; interviewing community leaders and other stakeholders about food system issues; developing a survey to distribute throughout the county; and leading community brainstorming sessions.

The interns will work 10 hours per week throughout the fall and spring semesters. The primary worksite could either be on campus (Symons Hall) or the Center for Educational Partnership, located 5 miles east of campus and accessible by the Shuttle UM – New Carrollton Route. This project will involve fieldwork so having a vehicle and being willing to drive throughout the county is essential. Some work could be done at the Prince George’s County Planning Department in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Qualifications: Experience with primary data collection, experience with conducting surveys and interviews, detail oriented, well-organized, self-directed, excellent written and oral communications skills. Knowledge of GIS preferred. Must have own laptop.

Position Description:

Fall 2012 Internship with NAAHL

The National Association of Affordable Housing Lenders (NAAHL) represents America’s lenders in moving private capital to those in need – organizations committed to increasing lending and investing private capital in low- and moderate-income (LMI) communities. This "who’s who" of private sector lenders and investors includes major banks, blue-chip non-profit lenders, consortia, CDFIs, and others in the vanguard of affordable housing. Interns will work side by side with association professionals as they advance NAAHL’s mission.

NAAHL seeks a college/university student who is interested in a Fall semester 2012, part-time internship. The internship will be for approximately four months (September-December), depending on the student’s academic schedule. The intern’s daily schedule can be flexible within normal business hours, Monday – Friday. The internship is located in Washington, D.C. and is unpaid. A public transit stipend is offered for the duration of the internship, and we will work to ensure student receives academic credit, if desired. While the internship may be of special interest to business, economics, journalism, and political science majors, all students are welcome to apply.

The intern will work closely with NAAHL staff on a number of tasks that will help advance their careers. Previous summer interns have assisted in writing memos, attended Congressional hearings and industry meetings, and helped conduct online research projects.

Other intern duties include:

· Compiling data in Excel spreadsheets

· Filing/data entry

· Front desk coverage, including answering the phones and greeting guests

· Other duties as assigned

Applicants should have excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work independently on multiple projects. Good judgment and significant knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is also a must. Other technical skills, including multimedia and social media are a plus but not required. This is a great opportunity for those interested in learning more about trade associations!

Listening Test for Native Arabic Speakers

Native speakers of Arabic learning English wanted for research study! You will complete the Versant Pro English Speaking Test via phone (30 minutes) at your convenience and, if eligible, participate in a research session (2-3 hours) where you will answer questions about your language background and complete an English listening comprehension test. Participants who complete the study will earn $95.

To be eligible to participate, you must: be a native speaker of Arabic learning English, who can understand most conversations in English except when the speech is very fast. Must be 18 or older.

• You must have unimpaired use of your dominant writing hand.
• You do not have a personal history of neurological, neuropsychiatric, psychiatric disorders, or learning disabilities.
• You do not have a recent history of excessive alcohol consumption, drug use, or substance abuse.
