Before becoming the Dean of BSOS, Dr. Ball served as Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences and Vice Dean for Science and Research Infrastructure in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Ball’s past research has covered brain and social behaviors, with his most recent focus on interrelationships among steroid hormones. Dean Ball has earned a B.A. in Psychology from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in psychobiology from the Institute of Animal Behavior at Rutgers University.

Maryland Summer Scholars Program - Information Sessions
The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students to spend the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research or artistic projects. Maryland Summer Scholars research may take place in College Park or anywhere in the US or abroad as required by the nature of the project. For the summer of 2016, the program will provide awards of $3,000 to approximately 25 outstanding, competitively selected applicants. [Please note: if your proposed research requires travel outside of the College Park area, you may apply for a supplementary travel award of up to $1,000.]

The Hyattsville Community Development Corporation (CDC), a local non-profit community organization serving Hyattsville, the Gateway Arts District, and the Route 1 Corridor, seeks part-time interns for Winter 2016 and Spring 2016. This is an unpaid, part time internship with a flexible work schedule and environment that fosters creativity and independence.
Interns will work in varying capacities to assist in project development, community outreach, and local arts programming.
Desired qualities include a combination of the following: knowledge of public policy, community development, planning, grant writing, real estate development, or facility with basic web development tools.
Project Management and Planning
- The intern will be introduced to live project management and project planning on an array of current ongoing projects. Project placement will be based on both personal interests as well as the current priorities of the organization.
Program Research and Review
- The intern will perform necessary research for ongoing projects. Research findings and reports will be used to guide project direction.
Communications and Outreach
- The intern will use different communication strategies, including social media and web-based platforms to reach out to the public
- The intern will provide and maintain content for promotional websites under the CDC’s guidance. Content may include maps created using GIS software.
Previous interns have tackled zoning and land use, preliminary planning proposals, sector plan feasibility, GIS data, arts festival event planning, public art proposals and small business assistance.
In addition for Spring 2016, we are also seeking bilingual candidates (Spanish/English) to assist in specific assignments related to our growing Spanish-speaking community. Responsibilities include: translating outreach materials, drafting correspondence, communicating with local business owners, on-site implementation during events, and other activities as needed.

Recruiting BSOS peer mentors for Spring 2016
The Peer Mentor Program is a component of the student services offered by the BSOS Advising Center. The primary role of Peer Mentors is to teach the BSOS Graduation Planning workshops each semester and conduct various presentations in BSOS UNIV100 sections. Through the services they provide to fellow students Peer Mentors gain leadership, presentation, and public speaking skills. In preparation for their required tasks, all Peer Mentors are expected to attend weekly class sessions and serve for at least two semesters. Spring Internship Opportunities with the Economic Development Administration
We are seeking applicants for our internship program at the Economic Development Administration (EDA), U.S. Department of Commerce. EDA’s mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy. EDA drives collaborative regional economic development initiatives that lead to job creation.

Senior Research Assistant with The Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy
BASIC FUNCTION
The
Senior Research Assistant/Analyst undertakes joint research assignments with
senior fellows, primarily on the federal budget, the deficit, and related
legislative and policy options, as well as various other current issues in
fiscal and monetary policy and health economics. Communicate with outside and
inside authors; assist with events. Title and salary will be based on
qualifications and experience.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s
degree in economics, mathematics, public policy or a social science with a
minor in economics required. Master’s degree in a similar field preferred, but
not required. Minimum one year of work experience in economics and/or computer
modeling required. Competence to undertake research assignments with little
supervision.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Familiarity
with federal budget issues and/or issues related to health economics, and
relevant data sources and literature strongly preferred. Basic knowledge of
software packages such as Word and Excel. Experience with software such as SAS,
STATA, and other econometric packages required. Experience handling large data
sets and models preferred. Experience with web coding/scripting (such as
Javascript, HTML, and CSS), and database management (such as SQL, Microsoft
Access, etc.) preferred. Independent research experience preferred.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Research Analysis
·
Provide analytical reviews and summaries of existing literature
pertinent to assigned topic.
·
Collect and organize data and documents from various sources
including electronic databases, libraries, and government documents.
·
Analyze data, using spreadsheets and statistical packages.
Produce charts and tables containing the results.
40% Writing and Editing
·
Co-author papers and blog posts with senior research staff.
·
Develop detailed outlines and first drafts of papers or sections
of papers and work closely with senior research staff through the publication
process.
·
Help adapt papers to reach various audiences through summaries,
blog posts, data visualization, and other methods.
10% Administrative Support
·
Assist Hutchins Center leadership with day-to-day activities of
the Center, including research, policy, outreach, scheduling, and other
activities as assigned.
·
Assist with Hutchins Center events as needed, including meeting
preparation, calendar support, and logistics for public events, private
roundtables, and additional activities.
·
Other duties as assigned.
