News Assistant – Economics/Foreign Affairs The Asahi Shimbun Job for May or Recent Grad (Excellent for ECON Grads)

The Asahi Shimbun is Japan’s leading national daily newspaper. Based in Tokyo, it has a circulation of five million, and more than 3 million subscribers to its digital news site. Its main office in North America is located in Washington D.C. There are bureaus in New York, and San Francisco.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferable). Background in global economy, international trade and macroeconomics is highly desirable. Interest in East Asia preferred.

Description
Duties include assisting our Washington-based correspondents with articles by conducting thorough background research, attending press briefings and hearings, gathering news and views, arranging interviews, and closely following developments in the Congress especially in terms of its fiscal and trade policies. This position will cover such important government agencies as the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Federal Reserve System, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, and the Department of Commerce Some administrative support, such as transcribing interviews and other assignments, is also required.

This is a research position with no article-writing or byline opportunities. Compensation includes overtime pay, excellent medical/dental benefits, commuting expenses, and 401(k). Position will be available immediately.

They offer programs that assist students who identify as women and non-binary in launching their careers in tech through innovative courses, opportunities to work with tech companies, and networking events with like-minded students and working professionals.

Break Through Tech DC at UMD facilitates opportunities for students to kickstart their career in tech. Here are ways you can join us:
  • Apply for Summer Guild – UMD students will learn how to code real-world, mission-driven applications. Guild will take place virtually August 2–6, 2021, and August 9–13, 2021. Applications are open now and close on July 2. There is no cost to participate and students receive a $150 stipend for participating. Learn more and apply.
  • Take an Intro Computing Course – Take our new 3-credit course, CMSC 125: Introduction to Computing, and spend the semester exploring computing majors at UMD and tech careers while getting experience with computing concepts and hands-on coding.

Work with the China team to develop and execute programs and events. Conduct research, help write daily reports on relevant news and policy developments and provide general administrative and logistical support.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct research on emerging issues for American business interests in China.
  • Provide program and logistical coordination for meetings, events, and missions.
  • Help manage revenues and expenses for events.
  • Maintain database and marketing materials.
  • Schedule meetings.
  • Provide other operational and administrative support as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in international affairs or related field, particularly with an emphasis on China studies.

Qualifications

Applied Micro-Economist/Econometrician - Postal Regulatory Commission

The Applied Micro-Economist/Econometrician position is located in the Office of Accountability and Compliance (OAC) of the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC). The PRC is an independent establishment of the executive branch created by Congress to provide strengthened oversight of the United States Postal Service. OAC is responsible for promoting Postal Service transparency and accountability by establishing and maintaining a modern system to regulate rates, ensuring Postal Service compliance with the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, making recommendations based on the analysis of Postal Service financial reports, and by preparing annual and periodic reports to Congress.

Candidates will have a background in data analysis and statistical programming (SAS, R, Stata, etc.). They will use analytical software to analyze service performance, economic, and financial data, and to provide recommendations to leadership.  The work performed involves empirical skills and the rigorous application of economics. The position will design, develop and apply econometric methods and techniques to model statistical processes, and economic and cost attribution concepts.  The ability to communicate complex concepts orally and in writing is essential.

Economics Internship at the Food and Drug Administration

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) invites undergraduate juniors or seniors, or master’s students majoring in Economics, Information Systems, Public Health, or other Statistics-related fields to apply for an internship with the Economics Staff in the Office of the Commissioner. Selected interns will assist members of the Economics Staff in setting up processes to improve workflow and conducting economic analyses of major FDA policies and regulations related to food, human drugs, medical devices, biological products, tobacco products, and animal drugs and feed.

Internships will be for one academic semester and require a minimum commitment of 16 hours per week. Intern positions are unpaid; however, students may be able to earn college credit.* U.S. citizenship is required.

Candidates must have at least Junior Standing and have completed classes in econometrics and intermediate microeconomics, or similar classes on computational methods for data analysis by the time of the internship. Competitive candidates are detail-focused, have strong communication and writing skills, and be able to work independently. We encourage candidates to apply who have experience with Microsoft 365 including Access, Excel, Word, and SharePoint Online; analytical software such as STATA and R; and applications such as Python.

Application packages must include a cover letter and current resume. Include in your cover letter a statement of interest and acknowledgement that you are applying for an unpaid, 16 hour-per-week internship. Include in your resume a list of relevant courses and a declaration of citizenship.
