Applications Open for the Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program

The Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program honors the legacy of Howard Peters "Pete" Rawlings, who was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates representing the 40th district for more than two decades.

The Rawlings Program provides students the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Delegate Rawlings and develop as a champion for those marginalized and underrepresented in public leadership & decision-making processes.

Working with faculty, alumni and local leaders, Rawlings Fellows will develop skills and resources needed to take on leadership roles during the program and into their careers. Fellows will also grow to understand the importance of cultural pluralism and advocacy for unheard voices while developing leadership skills needed to adequately address these disparities.

The program offers opportunities for mentorship, professional development events, potential engagements with local & state leaders, the opportunity to secure an internship with a government agency, political organization or nonprofit and gain hands-on experience to actively serve in the local community. These program components help Rawlings Fellows realize their commitment to public service and further develop critical leadership skills necessary for a career in government, nonprofits or private sector jobs related to leadership and advocacy for the underrepresented.

Students must have 2 remaining semesters left at the start of the program in the fall to be eligible.

The application deadline is April 2, 2022.

Workshop: How to Prepare for an Interview

Location: Virtual Event
When: Thursday, March 10 & Monday, April 18, 12-12:45pm

Interviewing takes practice -- and interviews do not need to be perfect. You will say "um” at certain points. You will get caught off-guard by an unexpected interview question and will need some time to think through how to best answer it. You may need to ask the interviewer to repeat a question because you want to make sure you understood it correctly. These scenarios are okay! We are human. The key is to be prepared and be yourself throughout the interview process.

Event: The Art of Skepticism in a Data Driven World, March 30th

Celebrating Social Data Science with Dr. Jevin West
Hosted by Katie Shilton and Brian Kim, co-directors of UMD's new major in Social Data Science

Wednesday, March 30th at 3:00pm EST
Online via Zoom

To celebrate the launch of UMD's new major in Social Data Science, join us for a talk by Dr. Jevin West, associate professor at the Information School at the University of Washington and co-author of Calling Bullshit: The Art of Skepticism in a Data-Driven World.

Social Data Science is the first major at UMD to teach data science techniques alongside social science methods and theories to solve pressing social problems. Dr. West's research is at the forefront of that intersection. He is the co-founder of the new Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington, aimed at resisting strategic misinformation, promoting an informed society and strengthening democratic discourse. And he has dedicated his teaching to helping students use the tools of data science to think critically about what constitutes evidence. We are delighted to have him speak as we launch the new major!

Abstract:

"Today’s world is more thoroughly quantified than ever before. We are awash in numbers, statistics, figures, algorithms, and data graphics. Quantitative information is power: it is used to convey objectivity, to strengthen arguments, and to inform decisions—and all too often it is used to impress, overwhelm, and persuade without any conviction to truth. Fortunately, one doesn’t need an advanced degree in data science (although quite helpful) to see through the vast majority of quantitative misinformation. Drawing on examples from current events of misleading claims and misuses of artificial intelligence, this talk aims to empower data scientists and the everyday information consumer to push back when confronted by numerical arguments and data-hungry technologies. By focusing attention on the data sources and their weaknesses, rather than on the complex and often obscure algorithms and statistical procedures, we can see through the hype and hold our own against those selling quantitative snake-oil."

You can learn more about the new Bachelors of Science in Social Data Science here. Prospective students can also speak with an iSchool Undergraduate Advisor during drop-in advising hours.
