New Winter 2026 Education Abroad Class: "A Green Giant? Environmentalism and Technology in Germany, Today and Yesterday."

Explore the history and future of green technologies in Munich! This three credit study-abroad course will focus on Germany’s role as an economic and technological powerhouse and its claim to be a global environmental leader from the 1930s to the 2020s. Topics include the roles of scientists and engineers during and after the Nazi dictatorship, the complicity of big business in the Holocaust, and the rise of environmentalism and of green technology in recent decades. Munich is an ideal site to study these issues. We will work with curators at the Deutsches Museum, the world’s largest museum for the history of science and technology, tour the Dachau concentration camp memorial site, and visit the BMW factory.
 
The deadline to sign up is 9/30. You can earn credit for one of these three-credit courses: HIST252, ECON258G, ENES269Z, GERS262, CPSP279G, and PHPE308Q. This course also counts as an elective for the Sustainability minor, as an elective for the STEP minor, and as a practicum for the STS Scholars program under the ENES designation. Scholarships are available.

The Maryland State Retirement and Pension Systems is currently hiring for a Summer Investment Associate Intern. The Maryland State Retirement Agency (the “Agency”) is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (the “System”). The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 205,000 active members and more than 175,000 retirees and beneficiaries.
The Investment Division of the Maryland State Retirement Agency seeks two bright, highly motivated individuals to join our Investment Associate Internship Program. Each Intern will have a hands-on opportunity to apply what has been learned in the classroom to a real world, large-scale investment operation. The interns will be assigned special projects, learn how to utilize financial software, and work with experts who are responsible for investing the plan assets of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System, totaling approximately $73 Billion as of June 30, 2025.

The Interns, like our Investment Team, must maintain a positive team management approach and be both results driven and creative problem solvers who work together to assist the team in managing our global multi-asset portfolio.

The Investment Division is committed to providing professional work experience that will give the Investment Associate Interns a complete understanding of the institutional investment process and to provide a diverse and inclusive workplace that embraces both analytical and innovative thinkers. Announcing Fall 2025 Do Good Institute Opportunities

I want to share several upcoming opportunities from the Do Good Institute. Some of these programs have deadlines approaching in the next few weeks (September 14 is the first deadline for several programs), so I encourage you to take a look!

The Do Good Institute (dogood.umd.edu) offers immersive programs, funding opportunities, and internship experiences that prepare Terps with the skills, experiences and resources to Do Good throughout their lives. There are several upcoming programs and opportunities you may be interested in for this fall:

Experiential Programs | Deadline: September 14

  • Changemaker Pathways: Want to Do Good but don’t know where to start? Explore ways that you can Do Good in your personal, professional and educational life through this 6-week experiential program for first-year, second-year and transfer students.   • Impact Bootcamp: Take your passion and turn it into progress. Have an idea for impact but unsure where to start? Need help improving your existing efforts? Start or strengthen your social impact alongside fellow changemakers through this 6-week developmental program for students or teams with new ideas or existing initiatives.   • Accelerator Fellows: Spend the semester scaling and developing your social impact project or venture and receive a $2,000 stipend. Funding Opportunities

  • Mini-Grants: Receive $500 in funding to support your social impact on or off campus. Mini-Grants are available for individuals and teams with student-led, student-run proposals engaging in fundraising, service, advocacy, entrepreneurship, research or other activities to Do Good.   • Do Good Campus Fund: The Do Good Campus Fund supports the substantial efforts happening across University of Maryland, aimed at reimagining learning and serving humanity both inside and outside the classroom. The Provost and the Do Good Institute will award up to $320,000 this academic year to faculty, staff and student groups for projects to commence in summer or fall 2026. Apply to join Promoting Achievement and Diversity in Economics (PADE) -- applications due August 21

Economics majors who are interested in pursuing careers or graduate studies in the field are welcome to apply to join Promoting Achievement and Diversity in Economics (PADE). Students who participate in PADE receive mentoring, tutoring and support for relevant coursework, and the chance to speak with professional economists about their careers and research.  PADE aims to increase the diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives of those entering the Economics profession.  You can learn more about the program here:  https://econ.umd.edu/undergraduate/promoting-achievement-and-diversity-economics-pade 

 

PADE is a year-long program that offers study sessions and extra office hours for core classes like ECON321, 325, and 326, and MATH140 and 141. PADE students are supported by Professor Jessica Goldberg, the program’s faculty director, as well as a graduate assistant, and staff in the advising office.  At the beginning of the semester, program staff meet with each student to set personal academic and professional goals, and to agree to a schedule of weekly academic meetings to help achieve those goals.  Those meetings may include regular study sessions or participation in a reading group, with the opportunity to explore the economics research about topics of interest to students.  

 

PADE participants will also have the chance to network with economists working at organizations such as the Federal Reserve Board, the World Bank, and the Brookings Institution, and will receive support in applying for summer internships, on-campus research assistantships and to graduate school in Economics (or related disciplines).

 

The expected time commitment during the academic year is 3-4 hours per week, including time spent reviewing material or assignments for other economics or math classes taken to fulfill requirements for a major in Economics.  Participants receive one credit for Econ 399 each semester.

The Rodler-Wood Endowed Scholarship Application is open in Scholarship Universe. Applications for this LGBTQ Studies and community focused award are due April 28thThe Rodler-Wood Endowed Scholarship provides $1,000 to support student success in their upcoming academic year.

Award Selection Criteria (Selection is based on one or more criteria)

  • Demonstrated financial need

  • Academic interest in LGBTQ Studies

  • Extracurricular activities on behalf of LGBTQ issues

  • Hardship based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity

The Bright Futures Initiative awards students with need-based scholarships ranging from $100-$1,250 to help offset expenses incurred during unpaid internships.

 

Eligibility

  • A secured unpaid on-campus and off-campus internship with a non-profit organization or government agency for summer 2025.
  • A new internship experience during summer 2025 and completed by the start of the fall 2025 semester.
  • Supervised by a professional in the field.
  • Registered UMD undergraduate students returning to campus for Fall 2025.  May 2025 graduating seniors are not eligible.
  • Preference will be given to those who have not previously received this scholarship.

 

This scholarship is generously funded by the Eisen Family, the University Career Center & The President’s Promise, and individual donors through Maryland Giving Day.

 

Sustainability Unpaid Internship Scholarship

Volunteer for Maryland Day 2025!


Join the Department of Economics at Maryland Day 2025 on Saturday, April 26th !
Maryland Day is the University’s annual springtime open house and is always a day of
learning, fun, and discovery for the UMD community and our neighbors. We are looking
for students interested in volunteering alongside ECON staff to help lead departmental
activities (like a fun risk aversion game that rewards players with candy. and speak to
members of the public and prospective students about the major.

Volunteers can staff the table in two hour shifts from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on the day and will get a free Maryland Day t-shirt for lending a hand. Please fill out this Google Form with your contact information and availability to be added to the list. Please note that shifts will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis.
