The Office of Sustainability is excited to announce that applications for our 2026-2027 student internship cohort are now open! These are one-year, paid positions for students enrolled in the fall 2026 and spring 2027 semesters. The positions and their descriptions can be found on the Office of Sustainability website.

Annual BSOS Student Faculty Social

The Student Faculty Social will serve as a great opportunity for students and faculty of all majors/departments to network, discuss their academic and research interests, and to overall strengthen the community of BSOS.

The event will be held at the Adele H. Stamp Student Union’s Atrium on Tuesday, March 3rd from 6-8 pm. Drinks and food will be provided, and speakers from the BSOS College will be present. There is no charge to attend.

Study Abroad Summer 2026: UMD-Mexico International Economic Policy in Action (ECON358C)

Immerse yourself in Mexico City’s dynamic culture and policy environment and gain a global understanding of how international economic policy works in practice in this 3 credit course. Students will participate in expert talks at major policy institutions like the central bank, the finance ministry, private financial institutions, and universities in Mexico City to learn first-hand about trade and macroeconomic policy and their effects on institutions and entrepreneurship. In this program, you will also participate in a variety of cultural activities and visits to archeological sites, such as the pyramids at Teotihuacan and a Mexican cooking class. The course will include a series of mandatory pre-departure short modules (online) and 2-3 pre-trip orientation sessions (in person and online).

Eligibility

• UMD and non-UMD freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply.
  
• You must be in good academic and judicial standing and you must not have any registration blocks to participate in this program. 
• The minimum GPA for this program is 2.5
• Students are expected to have completed ECON200 and ECON201 with a minimum grade of C- achieved to participate in this program.

The Do Good Institute (dogood.umd.edu) offers immersive programs, funding opportunities, and internship experiences that prepare Terps with the skills, experiences and resources to Do Good throughout their lives. There are several upcoming programs and opportunities you may be interested in for this spring:

Internship Opportunities

• Impact Interns: Impact Interns is a professional development and leadership program that connects passionate and talented students to paid social impact-based internship opportunities with Do Good partners and local organizations. The program is designed to provide emerging social sector leaders with meaningful opportunities to gain professional experience, develop skills, build a professional network and learn more about working in the nonprofit and social impact sphere.  Internships take place in Summer 2026. Internship positions are available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Work areas are diverse (communications, research, fundraising, program management) and across different fields (arts, civics, education, environment, health, justice and equity, and social services). Hybrid, remote, and in-person options are available. Students can apply now through February 16 at go.umd.edu/impactinterns. 

Experiential and Cohort Programs

• Changemaker Pathways: Want to Do Good but don’t know where to start? Explore ways that you can Do Good in your personal, professional and educational life through this 6-week experiential program for first-year, second-year and transfer students. Register now through February 16 at go.umd.edu/changemakerpathways.

• Impact Bootcamp: Take your passion and turn it into progress. Have an idea for impact but unsure where to start? Need help improving your existing efforts? Start or strengthen your social impact alongside fellow changemakers through this 6-week interactive program for students or teams with new ideas or existing initiatives. Register now through February 16 at go.umd.edu/impactbootcamp.

• Accelerator Fellows: Spend the semester scaling and developing your social impact project or venture and receive a $2,000 stipend. Accelerator Fellows is a great fit for students or teams with developed initiatives that are currently in the implementation stage of their work. Students in the early stage of their initiatives, or still at the idea stage, should consider Impact Bootcamp. Apply now through February 16 at go.umd.edu/acceleratorfellows.

Competitions

• Do Good Challenge: This annual, campus-wide social impact competition has doubled its prize awards this year! Students and teams can compete to win a share of $40,000 by pitching the impact they’ve made in front of a panel of expert judges and an audience of hundreds. CARE Peer Programs Now Accepting Applications

2026-27 Peer Programs applications are open! CARE offers three Peer Programs for current undergraduate students: Peer Advocacy, Peer Education, and Peer Outreach. Our programs enable students to gain hands-on professional experience along with six course credits. 

Students will learn about power-based violence, support survivors, develop their public speaking skills, and gain program planning experience. It is a great opportunity for students to boost their resumes and get involved on campus! Undergraduate students can apply at go.umd.edu/carepeerapplication. Applications close March 9th, 2026.

Dr. Erik Gartzke is the Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Peace and Security Studies (cPASS) at the University of California, San Diego. His research focuses on war, peace, and international institutions. His interests include nuclear security, the liberal peace, alliances, uncertainty and war, deterrence theory, and the evolving technological nature of interstate conflict. Dr. Gartzke has also written extensively on cyberwar, trade and conflict, and the effects of economic development, system structure, and climate change on war. His work has been published in numerous academic journals and edited volumes.

2026 BSOS Summer Research Initiative

 

Are you looking for a PAID summer internship that will give you research experience in the behavioral and social sciences?

APPLY TO THE 2026 BSOS SUMMER RESEARCH INITIATIVE (SRI)! The deadline to apply is February 10.

The SRI program is designed to encourage and broaden the participation of scholars working in social and behavioral science, practice, teaching, and policy fields. The program provides rising juniors and seniors with an 8-week intensive experience to develop research skills, learn about doctoral training, and increase graduate training readiness.

The 2026 BSOS SRI runs from June 1, 2026 - July 24, 2026

Participating BSOS Departments include African American and Africana Studies, Anthropology, Criminology & Criminal Justice, Economics, Geographical Sciences, Government & Politics, Hearing & Speech Sciences, Program in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science, Psychology, and Sociology.

The SRI provides:
A $4,000 stipend (before taxes)
Travel to /from College Park, Maryland
University housing and meals
