Intergroup Dialogue Program for Undergraduate Students-1 Credit Course!

Dear Students,

As part of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, we offer the Words of Engagement Intergroup Dialogue Program (WEIDP) for undergraduate students who are interested in engaging with other students on difficult, but rewarding, topics. Our intergroup dialogues include dialogues across race, class, gender, nationality, sexuality, among others. Classes are taught by trained and experienced facilitators. Participants can expect a rich and rewarding experience as well as an opportunity to develop skills in cultural competence. 

All dialogues are 7-week, 1-credit courses that are held in the first and second halves of each semester and WEIDP courses satisfy the new General Education Cultural Competence. The Spring 2014 dialogue schedule can be found here: http://www.odec.umd.edu/WE/Flyers/Dialogue%20Schedule.pdf

Spring Internships at START - Deadline to apply Tomorrow, Nov. 13th!

National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START), a DHS Center of Excellence based at the University of Maryland is excited to announce our Spring 2014 internship opportunities.

We are looking for interns with a wide array of skills and majors (including but not limited to: Criminology, Communications, Government, International Relations, Public Policy, History, GIS, Geography, Economics, English and Mathematics). Students from any institution may apply and we will consider current and recently graduated undergraduates and graduates as well. In addition to the experience gained during their internship, interns will also receive mentoring, training and be able to participate in a calendar of professional development activities. START is also willing to work with academic institutions to enable their students to undertake our internships for credit. Our internships are unpaid and students must be able to undertake their work hours at START at the University of Maryland College Park.

Nov. 11th - Last Day to Drop with "W"

Monday November 11, 2013 is the last day for undergraduate students to withdraw from 1 course up to 4 credits for the current Fall 2013 semester. If you have questions about dropping a course, please contact an advisor at 301 - 405 - 8367.

If you need to drop a course and you have already dropped a course this semester, you will need to schedule an appointment to discuss requesting an Exception to University Policy for a second W with an advisor.

If you are on academic probation or dismissal and would like to drop a course with a W you need to schedule an appointment to get this permission.

"An additional drop period for undergraduate students begins at the close of the schedule adjustment period and ends at the end of the tenth week of classes. During the drop period a student may drop a maximum of four credits or one course. Courses dropped during this time (after the schedule adjustment period) will be recorded on the student’s transcript with a “W” notation for undergraduate students only. (This mark is not used in computing the semester or cumulative GPA.) No notation will appear on the graduate record for courses dropped during the drop period."

CRCC Asia Scholarships - 2013/2014

During the month of November, we will be giving away 15 scholarships, totalling more than $30,000, for students who wish to go on our China Internship Program. This Program is designed to provide students with international work experience and cultural immersion in the world's fastest growing and most exciting country.

Below is a short message that can easily be sent out, as well as a CRCC Asia flyer attached.

Are you interested in gaining international work experience and building your post-graduation job prospects? Consider doing an internship in China! During the month of November, CRCC Asia is running its annual Scholarship Program and we are giving away 15 scholarships, totalling more than $30,000 for students who wish to take part in our programs in 2014. The application is open until November 22nd 2013 and applicants will be judged on the strength of their application and phone interview, with a final decision made in the first week of December 2013.

CRCC Asia’s China Internship Program provides one, two, or three month internships in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Sanya. Fluent English is the only language requirement and there is a program start date each month of the year.

We work with over 400 top companies in China to offer a wide range of placements across various industries including finance, law, marketing/PR, engineering, accounting, pharmaceuticals, NGO's and many others. All accommodation and visa processing is included in the program, as well as a schedule of social and business events.

We have over 3500 alumni from more than 150 countries worldwide, who have all benefited from the CRCC Asia China Internship Program.

Students for a New American Politics Fellowship Opportunity

Students for a New American Politics PAC is pleased to announce the 2014 Organizing Fellowship Program. The SNAP Fellowship is a paid grassroots organizing fellowship for students and youth that’s fast-paced, high-impact, and focused on social justice values. This isn’t your average summer internship – it’s your opportunity to create real, lasting change.

As a SNAP Organizing Fellow, you’ll receive training from experienced organizers with roots in electoral politics as well as the labor and economic justice, environmental, LGBTQ, and immigrants’ rights movements. You’ll learn to talk to voters and recruit volunteers to elect Democratic candidates who are ready to put Congress to work building a fairer society. 

SNAP seeks to hire 20 Organizing Fellows in our early application round and 15-20 more in the March regular round. All Organizing Fellows will be placed on liberal/progressive Congressional campaigns in competitive districts across the country. Fellows will attend a three-day training session in the New York metro area in early June and then work as grassroots organizers on campaigns from early June to the middle of August. Many past fellows have been asked to stay on their campaigns through the fall.

Equal Access Statement: SNAP believes that our country’s leadership should reflect its diversity. We therefore pay all Organizing Fellows a stipend of up to $5,000, based on financial need. The average stipend in summer 2012 was $1,443 plus free housing and travel for 10 weeks.

Comparative Advantage, Stanford's Undergraduate Economics Journal Looking for Submissions

Interested in getting your work in economics published? If so, you may be interested in submitting an article to Comparative Advantage, Stanford’s undergraduate economics journal, which is currently accepting outside submissions for its Winter Edition.

Comparative Advantage is unique in that it publishes high-quality work that also aims to appeal to a broader audience beyond economics academia.  Our goal is to promote and add to the discussion of topics in economics, both within and outside of the economics community, on our campus and others.

We accept work in a wide range of topics, including macroeconomic concepts and public policy, microeconomic theory, finance, and advanced topics or honors theses.  Articles should be 7-10 pages long with 1.5 spacing and Times New Roman font, size 12. Graphs and charts are welcome. Citations should be APA. Also, please include a brief abstract (3-5 sentences) with your article submission.

You are encouraged to submit papers from class if you have prior instructor permission. 

If you are interested in writing, please submit by December 1^st. You will hear back by December 8^th as to whether your article has been accepted for publication.
