the home country you haven’t visited in a decade and share that experience with
other BSOS students?
Are you a fan of a foreign film
director whose work relates to a social or behavioral science and would you
enjoy viewing a film and moderating a discussion of their work with your fellow
students?
Are you an international student
who’d like to connect with a small class of other BSOS students?
Are you passionate about a
global cause and want to host a spokesperson for that cause by
video-conference?
Do you enjoy collaborating with
others from diverse backgrounds?
Do you have strong
communication skills?
Do you have a passion for
community service?
If the answer
to three or more of these questions is “yes” you are a
good candidate for BSOS Global Scholars.
In
spring semester 2014 Global Scholars candidates will complete a one-credit
capstone. Capstone projects may include organizing an interactive
video-conference between a group of Maryland students and a group of students
at a foreign university, making and presenting a short video or multi-media
presentation for fellow Global Scholars candidates and a larger BSOS group, or
a student-designed, instructor-approved alternative. Students are
expected to participate in a minimum of ten hours of cross-cultural community
service throughout each semester.
The BSOS Global Scholar
designation is an academic honor awarded to students after completion of
a one-year program who:

Serve
as role models for future students
·
Enjoy
collaborating with others from very different backgrounds
·
Anticipate
using their cross-cultural understanding to succeed in graduate school and/or
their future careers
·
Are
passionate about resolving global problems
To be accepted as a
scholars candidate, students must have completed at least 60 credits and must
outline the experiences and coursework they have had and/or will
have completed by the end of Summer II 2013 in these areas:
- Experience
in a second culture – living or studying abroad, and/or living in a
minority community
- Global
curriculum – 12 credits in global or ethnic studies
- Service-oriented
experiential learning of a cross-cultural nature
- Knowledge
of more than one language

Requirements & Planning

The incoming class of Global Scholars
candidates will meet before leaving campus in the spring and decide on a
broad theme for the year (e.g. migration, reconciliation). They
actively design and participate in a small two-credit seminar during fall
semester 2013. Each student will be responsible for organizing one class
session and assisting a classmate with one session including:

Lining up a guest speaker or panel or securing a film
·
Formulating a related reading assignment
·
Moderating a discussion
