Maryland Mathematical Modeling Competition! (and FREE FOOD)

First meeting:
Wednesday, 9/25, 4:45-5:30 PM
Mathematics Building MTH, room 3206

Contact:
Matthew Guay (mguay@math.umd.edu)
The Maryland Mathematical Modeling Contest (M3C) is a new intramural competition, organized by the University of Maryland Mathematics and AMSC departments, based on the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). The M3C is aimed at students in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, and operations research with an interest in the modeling techniques that pervade all of these disciplines.

Over the course of four days, use mathematical, programming and research skills in teams of three to solve a complex open-ended problem and write a paper detailing your model and solution. Problems like:
  • Developing efficient water usage strategies for nations facing water stress.
  • Charting the spread of invasive beetle species and analyzing containment policies
  • Developing traffic flow models for traffic circle design
Winners will receive prizes and the chance to compete in the international MCM in February!

Come to the M3C information session on Wednesday, 9/25 at 4:45PM. Held in room 3206 in the Mathematics Building (building code MTH), we'll explain the structure of the competition and the schedule for our modelling tutorial sessions, and yes, there will be food!

If you have any questions, send an email to Matt Guay (mguay@math.umd.edu), a graduate assistant for the M3C. You can also find more information and resources at our website: http://www.norbertwiener.umd.edu/Education/m3c.html

I hope to see you next Wednesday!
