Paid Energy, Climate & Finance Internship

The WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities seeks an Energy, Climate, and Finance Intern to support a project that focuses on improving the sustainability of urban services in the urban energy, buildings, and transport sectors. The project, a collaboration with Citi Foundation and C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, aims to take urban service delivery beyond business-as-usual and support cities in delivering solutions that meet the vital needs of citizens and local businesses, while producing local and global benefits.

This internship will support this project through research on sustainable service solutions, including working on selected deep dives in the areas of energy, buildings, and transport in Brazil, India, and Mexico. The Intern should have some knowledge and/or experience of municipal decision-making, sustainable low carbon urban infrastructure and financing of services delivery, public and private finance, domestic and international finance (including climate finance). The intern’s results of the research will be incorporated into a working paper.

The position is located in WRI's Washington, D.C. office and will report directly to the Director of Energy and Climate of the WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities.

Responsibilities
The intern will gain experience in the following areas:

Research (70%)
  • Organize and analyze data on topics related to emerging trends and best practices in urban services delivery, municipal finance and urban climate finance.
  • Conduct case studies analysis of innovative ways to deliver urban services in the urban energy, buildings, and transport sectors.
  • Conduct a literature review on municipal needs, solutions, and barriers; and delivery models, including business and financing Instruments.
  • Conduct data collection, including through use of databases and stakeholder interviews.
  • Contribute to a working paper on how cities can use existing and emerging financial mechanisms for improving service sustainability through new delivery models.
Outreach (10%)
  • Write a blog about the research for TheCityFix and WRI Insights.
Project Support (20%)
  • Provide ad-hoc support for events related to the project. Tasks include, but are not limited to, agenda setting, contacting invitees, logistical support, preparation of materials, tracking information flows, etc.
  • Provide travel-related support for the project. Tasks include, but are not limited to, coordinating travel, organizing expense reports, etc. 
Qualifications 
  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Urban and Regional Economics, Urban/Regional Planning, Environmental Science, or related discipline
  • Preferred:Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Urban Planning, or Environmental Science.
  • Demonstrated interest in and passion for urban sustainability.
  • Experience of using qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as part of a team, including actively contributing to team discussions
  • Ability to think creatively
  • Flexible, responsible, self-motivated
  • Extremely well-organized and efficient
  • Preferred: Proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese
Final candidates will be required to take a writing test.

Salary: This is a paid intern position with an hourly rate based on experience.

Duration: 6 months
