International Students - Support Group and Drop in Hours

International Student Support Group

The group provides a safe & comfortable environment for international students to:
  • Meet other international students and learn from different cultures,
  • Talk about issues that are not often discussed in the classroom (e.g., adjustment issues, cultural differences, tips to navigate on and off campus), and
  • Practice English!
The group meets at Shoemaker Building. If interested, contact Dr. Jinhee Kang at jkang79@umd.edu for Tuesday Group (12:00-1:30 pm).

Drop-In Hour
Safe and Inclusive Support
(Fall and Spring Semesters)

Free unscheduled time with a counselor is available to international students Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. Please note that students will be asked to complete several brief surveys prior to meeting with a counselor within an hour of arrival.

The Counseling Center in Shoemaker Hall is a safe and inclusive space where counselors provide support to students from underrepresented populations. Recognizing that stigma about seeking counseling and unfamiliarity about the counseling process prevents some students from getting the help they need, the Counseling Service makes requesting time with a counselor easier to specific student populations.
