Extended Studies Summer Session Grant

The Extended Studies Summer Session Grant is for degree seeking University of Maryland, College Park undergraduate students attending Summer Session and enrolled in courses administered by the Office of Extended Studies (OES). Courses administered through OES have the following section numbers: 01**, 02**, 03**, 04**, 05**, 06**, WB**, HY**, I1**, I2**.

The grant is funded through OES and is designed to provide need-based aid to students who otherwise could not afford to enroll in summer courses. The amount of funding available each year is at OES discretion and is limited.

Awarding:
The following is the awarding criteria:
  • Undergraduate, degree-seeking University of Maryland College Park seniors and juniors are given first consideration, then sophomores, then freshmen
  • Students must have a minimum 2.0 grade point average
  • The student must have exhausted all other sources of aid including federal loans (Stafford and Perkins, if available)
  • Students must demonstrate need; with students with the lowest income and greatest unmet need having first priority
  • Students must be enrolled for at least 3 credits or more
  • Students with merit aid or other institutional aid are given last priority
Funding:
Students are awarded up to $1,000 for the entire summer term (summer I and summer II combined).

Summer Internship with the Federal Audit Clearinghouse, US Census Bureau

The Federal Audit Clearinghouse is looking for interns to help improve and grow their systems, programs, and customer experience.

The Federal Audit Clearinghouse is an area of the U.S. Census Bureau which collects and disseminates audit data on behalf of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for non-federal entities such as states, city/county governments, universities, and nonprofit organizations which spend over $750,000 in federal grant dollars in a single year. Major Duties:
  • Learn FAC IT systems and data
  • Attend meetings where you will be exposed to team interaction and decision making in a professional office environment
  • Update user manuals, guidance, and other tools and documents
  • Work with staff to translate customer needs into system requirements, change requests, and system enhancements
  • Learn to write test scripts to test system requirements, and use tracking software to record and track system defects and test results
  • Learn to study security logs for potential system breaches or suspicious user behavior
  • Assist management with reports, document preparation, presentation development, etc.
Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Experience with a variety of internet browsers and basic Microsoft Office and PDF software
  • Experience using database software and/or statistical software (desired, but not required)
  • Ability to analyze problems and effectively communicate solutions, both orally and in writing
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Highly motivated, self-starting, and team-oriented

Apply today for BSOS Summer/Fall 2019 Undergraduate Experience Funds!



The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is currently accepting applications for the BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds!

These funds assist undergraduate BSOS majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom, such as unpaid internships, research, service learning, and professional or academic conferences. The funds are intended to help offset expenses related to such activities like travel/transportation expenses, professional attire, and other opportunity costs (for example: the need to give up a part-time paid job in order to take an unpaid internship).

If you are an ECON major with financial need that is preventing you from taking advantage of an unpaid opportunity, I encourage you to apply for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds. There are two funds that are specifically intended just for ECON majors!

KNG Health Seeking Researcher for its Healthcare Reform and Payment Innovation Practice

KNG Health has an opening for a Research Associate in its Healthcare Reform and Payment Innovation practice. They are seeking candidates with strong quantitative skills, experience with programming in Stata (experience in SAS, R, Python, and VBA also welcome), and a Master’s degree (economics, mathematics, statistics, physics, or similar fields) or 3-5 years relevant experience. Candidates without a Master's degree but who possess strong research and programming skills may also be considered. Candidates should also have strong communication and writing skills. Earn Academic Credit for Research Practicum on Campus

In Fall 2019, the Department of Economics will once again offer ECON488K: Applied Research Practicum - Kaulkin Ginsberg Research Fellows Program. This course will meet on campus in the Fall semester Mondays from 5:30-7:30 pm. This program is an excellent opportunity for economics majors to gain practical experience producing market research valued by businesses. Students stay on campus but still engage in research activities that they might do as an intern or an entry level employee working on site at a consulting firm. The research produced could hypothetically help investors decide if they want to pursue activity in a specific segment of the business services market. A sample syllabus for this course is available here.

Entry into the program is competitive; only a maximum of 16 students will be selected to participate in Fall 2019. Students must meet the minimum qualifications and apply to be selected for this research course.

Minimum qualifications include: 
  • Junior or Senior ECON major 
  • UMD Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 
  • Successful completion of Intermediate Macroeconomics (ECON305 or ECON325) AND Intermediate Microeconomics (ECON306 or ECON326) 
  • Coursework or other experience using Excel, Access, or similar software 
  • Sign a release allowing the Department to share your academic transcript and application with Kaulkin Ginsberg 
  • Grant Kaulkin Ginsberg a nonexclusive, fully paid, irrevocable right and license to use the results of your group work for internal purposes.

Summer 2019 Economics Internship

The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), a premier trade association located in Washington, D.C., is seeking a paid intern to assist the Economics teams with primary research, writing and data work during the summer, starting this May.

They are seeking applicants that:

Junior Stanley Surrey Fellowship

Office of Tax Analysis Research Assistant Position (Junior Stanley Surrey Fellowship)

The Office of Tax Analysis (OTA) performs expert economic analysis of existing and proposed Federal tax policies for the Secretary of the Treasury, the President, the Congress, and the public. OTA advises in the formulation of Administration tax proposals, assesses major Congressional tax proposals, and assists in the implementation of enacted tax legislation. OTA's analyses are provided in various forms, including background papers, position papers, policy memoranda, briefings for policy makers, Congressional testimony, estimates of receipts for the Budget and for Treasury cash management decisions, estimates of revenue and distributional effects of proposed legislation, participation in regulatory guidance projects, and contributions to the negotiation of international tax treaties and agreements. To accomplish its mission, OTA conducts research to develop conceptual frameworks, models, data, methodologies, and empirical results to provide the foundations for its economic analysis of tax policies.

BSOS DSAC's Student to Student Series: Economics Meet-Up April 8



Freshmen and Sophomores (and students new to BSOS)! This event is a great opportunity for you.

The economics meet-up is intended to connect Freshmen + Sophomores beginning their journey at BSOS with Juniors and Seniors who are almost at the conclusion of their experience. The upperclassmen featured have a wide variety of experiences not just at BSOS, but in economics generally, including internships, jobs, study abroad, Maryland's 4+1 masters programs, and other formative opportunities.

These students will be sharing how they found their way from when they were just like YOU! Come either just to sit in or to ask questions.

Paid Summer Fair Labor Association Economic Research Internship

Position description
The Fair Labor Association (FLA) combines the efforts of industry, civil society organizations, and colleges and universities to protect workers’ rights and improve working conditions worldwide by promoting adherence to international labor standards. The FLA is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has offices in Geneva, Switzerland. For more information see http://www.fairlabor.org.

The Economic Research Fellowship is an opportunity for a current undergraduate student to apply their academic experience to furthering the Fair Labor Association’s mission towards Fair Compensation. The fellow will work alongside the FLA’s Fair Compensation Team to draft communications on high-level, research based guidance to FLA’s stakeholders. This is a paid fellowship being offered during the summer semester of 2019.

FDA Economics Internship Opportunity

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) invites undergraduates or master’s students to apply for an internship program in economics. The program is year round, with internship terms corresponding to fall and spring semesters or during the summer. Internships will be for one academic semester; interns will be expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week during most of the semester. The intern will work with the Economics Staff in the Office of the Commissioner. The intern will assist members of the Economics Staff in conducting economic analyses of major FDA policies and regulations having to do with food, human drugs, medical devices, biological products, tobacco products, and animal drugs and feed. The intern will report to an Assistant Director of the Economics Staff. The qualifications include meeting the University’s requirements for an internship; at least 6 completed semester classes in economics, which must include a class in intermediate microeconomics; and a class in econometrics or computer methods of data analysis. They encourage students to apply 6 to 8 weeks before the beginning of a semester.

Summer Institute with Korea Economic Institute of America

KEI is currently seeking graduate students & exceptional undergraduate students with an interest in Asia-Pacific issues for its summer 2019 intern class. We offer candidates a unique internship opportunity to be integrally involved in the inner workings of an international government policy institute. Due to the level of work expected of interns, the selection process is highly competitive and only open to the select few.

KEI interns are on the cusp of current events, hearing the news before it is released, and organizing the very interviews that are shown on the evening news. They are directly active in the practice of U.S.-ROK diplomacy and provided maximum exposure to the issues and major players in the field of U.S.-Korea Relations via: report publication, attendance at events, and both peer-to-peer and VIP networking opportunities. At KEI, interns gain experience in the areas of professional writing development, policy research, data collection, economic analysis, and event planning. 

Main Responsibilities
  • Attend and prepare short analytical reports on conferences, programs & hearings in the Washington, D.C. Area of interest;
  • Assist with the event planning and conducting of various KEI-sponsored conferences and programs;
  • Provide research support for KEI staff
  • Provide administrative activities which will contribute to a fuller understanding of the inner workings of KEI and work as a team with members of staff and other interns on major events and projects
  • Track specific issues in the media

Externship Experience: Economic and Financial Consulting


THE EXTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

The consulting staff at Cornerstone Research’s Washington, D.C. office will be sponsoring this one-day event. Participants will gain firsthand experience in financial and economic consulting through an interactive case study led by current analysts. Analysts will teach participants the basics of Microsoft Excel for economic consulting casework and introduce valuation techniques and statistical analyses frequently performed by analysts in their work. Participants will also meet with managers and officers with a wide variety of industry experiences to discuss career and graduate school options, as well as the internship and full time opportunities at Cornerstone Research.

The externship program is open to current sophomores (graduating between December 2020 and June 2021), and will be held on Thursday, April 25th. The program will run from 9:30 AM until 6:00 PM.

Ian Bremmer at the Center for Global Business Annual Forum

You are invited to attend the Center for Global Business First Annual Forum on Tuesday, April 9 featuring Ian Bremmer, President of the Eurasia Group, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Frank Auditorium of Van Munching Hall.  The discussion will be led by Rebecca Bellinger, executive director, and Dr. Kislaya Prasad, academic director of the Center for Global Business. Bremmer will offer insights into his new book, Us. Vs. Them: The Failure of Globalism, including the battle between globalism and nationalism, free trade versus protectionism, the impact of increased access to communication technologies in the developing world, and how our social contracts might be re-imagined. The first 50 attendees will receive a complimentary signed copy of his newest book.
