Business Intelligence (BI) Intern

Optimal Solutions Group, LLC (Optimal) is a leading non-partisan public policy research firm that conducts studies and provides technical assistance on health care, education, welfare, housing, community development, and related subjects. Our mission is to provide policy makers with rigorous and timely studies that enable our clients (including federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as private foundations) to improve public well-being.

The BI Intern position would require part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer. Compensation is commensurate with years of education, training, and pertinent experience.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with research and IT staff to gather business requirements; help prioritize the requirements; develop enhancements to the existing system, create technical specifications
  • Create and modify dashboards and reporting solutions using relevant business intelligence tools based on project requirements
  • Perform routine system maintenance, performance tuning, problem solving and debugging
  • Adhere to good systems development methodology
  • Perform periodic environmental scans of tools and technologies
  • Support on boarding and training of Business Users and train them in using dashboards.
  • Participates in special projects as required.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Good understanding of data warehousing concepts
  • Experience working with SQL Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the BI domain.
  • Ability to learn and understand architectural structure and layout of the Reporting suites
  • Experience in Spotfire, MicroStrategy, Cognos, Crystal Reports or reporting solutions/suites is a plus
  • Strong Communication skills (Verbal and written)
  • Must have strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem solving abilities.
  • Must have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must have the ability to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines.
  • Must be actively pursuing a B.S. or Master’s degree (majors in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, computer information Systems, or Computer Engineering preferred).
