Below is information about three Returning Student Scholarships for fall 2021 - to be eligible for these "returning" student scholarships, students must either be 23 years old or older (Portney) or 25 and up (Newcombe and Friedland).

The Returning Students Program was established by Barbara Goldberg and Beverly Greenfeig in 1973 to serve the needs of a growing number of adult women in their transition to University life. They are responsible for seeking funding for adult learners, and particularly women, through the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation. Since 1981, they have awarded over half a million dollars in scholarships to hundreds of adult learners. Beverly Greenfeig and Barbara Goldberg currently advise the Counseling Center in the administration of these scholarships.

THE CHARLOTTE W. NEWCOMBE SCHOLARSHIP
The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation provides scholarships in partnership with selected colleges and universities that welcome enrollment by mature adults and are committed to their success. The University of Maryland is very pleased to be selected as a partner institution with the Newcombe Foundation by providing Newcombe scholarships for mature adult students seeking to complete bachelor’s degrees at the University. Adult students now comprise a large portion of the enrollment at most colleges and universities, with many of these non-traditional students being mature women. Newcombe Scholarships help reduce dependence on loans while recognizing the tremendous efforts of many mature students make to be good students and to complete degrees while juggling a myriad of other commitments.

GERALD G. PORTNEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Gerald G. Portney Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in October 1995 by Clara Portney Felsher to honor the memory of her late husband, Gerald G. Portney. This fund serves to provide financial assistance for returning students.

B. UDELLE FRIEDLAND MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
The B. Udelle Friedland Memorial Scholarship was established by Udelle’s family to honor her memory and to provide need-based scholarship support to returning students at the University of Maryland. The scholarship supports returning students who are at least 25 years of age and who have earned at least 60 credits towards a bachelor's degree. Preference is given to students from the College of Education and the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
