Job Opportunity for Economics Students

Economics Students:
I am directing this opportunity to economics students in particular because I know from my own experience that my background as an economics major helped me a great deal in learning and enjoying the work for the position. For students who are interested in law school, this experience greatly helped me be ahead of my peers in terms of legal research, writing, and understanding complex legal concepts more generally. It also gave me a greater sense of the daily responsibilities and work product of an attorney, which better solidified and structured my studies and goals while in law school.
In general, qualified candidates would be quick learners, conscientious, diligent, hard working, and interested in learning. Flexibility with hours is also important as I did work some overtime. From my experience, it is important to be skilled at research, though research using legal databases can be learned on the job. Exposure to and interest in concepts in finance is important since a range of financial products arise in the course of the job. In general, the job includes some straight reading of texts, lots of research in different forms, editing and formatting of legal citations, and attending and note taking at various meetings. The lawyer would like to find someone who is interested in working for at least two years and the candidate must be able to clear a background check.
I will be collecting cover letters and resumes from any interested candidates and am happy to answer any questions about the position. Resumes should include GPA and can be emailed to me at mogershok@gmail.com.

I am
writing to inform you about an excellent full-time job opportunity for
graduating seniors and recent alumni working as a reader for a blind lawyer at
the SEC in Washington, DC. While the position has not yet been officially
posted, I know that the job will become open around the middle of this summer.
I worked for this lawyer myself after graduating from the University of
Virginia and prior to beginning law school, and she will need the position
filled as soon as her current reader leaves for law school. She would
like to make the position known to potentially qualified candidates and to
speak with these candidates in advance of when the position is posted in order
to facilitate finding someone to take over after her current reader departs in a
timely way, that is, without having a gap in reader coverage.

Indonesian Adidas Workers Speak Out at UMD!
Who: Former Indonesian Adidas Workers, United Students Against
Sweatshops
What: Beginning in February, United Students Against Sweatshops is conducting a nationwide Adidas worker tour with Aslam Hidayat and Heni Sutisna, two former Indonesian garment workers who sewed apparel for U Maryland and other universities at PT Kizone, an Adidas factory that shut down over a year and a half ago, leaving 2,700 workers unemployed. Since the factory closure, the former PT Kizone workers have been fighting for Adidas to pay 1.8 million in severance pay, a benefit that all companies are required to pay under Indonesian law. This Adidas worker tour event will be an incredibly powerful and informative opportunity for workers to speak directly with students and faculty about conditions in the global apparel industry and their struggle for justice. We hope to see you there!

Beyond College Academy
Program Description
Beyond College: A Plan for Graduate School Success will be an academy-like, certification program comprised of a series of seminars and workshops to educate University of Maryland students of color about the pathways to graduate school, including law, medical, dental and pharmacy professional schools. Specific topics will include the graduate school admissions process, introduction to graduate school exams (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, DAT), developing a competitive personal statement and resume, financing graduate school, an overview of UMD graduate programs, branding and social meeting and faculty and graduate student perspectives. The Academy will culminate in a celebratory event with awards and certificates for participants. Networking opportunities with various campus organizations will also be available.

Career Exploration/Clarification Help
Dear Students,
It is that time in the semester when you may be thinking of registration for next semester, that summer internship (but doing what???) , or your career future after graduation (Grad school? A job? But what field???). Students have found these services offered by the University Counseling Center helpful in clarifying and focusing career directions with regard to choosing an academic major, a career after graduation, and/or deciding on graduate education. It’s pretty difficult to make these decisions unless you know what you want! So here are some options to help you get focused:
Majors Walk-In on Wednesdays through April 24th for students who aren’t sure of their academic majors or aren’t sure they can be successful in their intended or current major. Students can walk-in without an appointment anytime 1-3pm on Wednesdays, (with the exception of March 20 and 27). You will be introduced and oriented to SIGI 3 is a self-paced career information system where you can identify careers and majors that would be suitable to your interests, values and personality.
Career Discovery Zone on Select Thursdays in March/April. This 5-session workshop series explores topics like how to charge of career future, how your interests and skills align with potential career paths, how your values can unlock doors to your career future, how to manage stresses and barriers when you are in the midst of any career decision, and more! No registration needed, just show up to one or all of the workshops. See the attached flyer or call the Counseling Center (301-314-7651) for additional information and dates.
Individual Career Counseling by Appointment. As always, if you want more individual support as you explore academic majors, career paths, graduate schools or other career-related decisions, individual career counseling and career assessments can be very beneficial. Individual counseling is also helpful if you are experiencing other stressors such as academic difficulty, health issues, family or personal concerns, as well as career questions.
