NEW Scholarships for Exchanges - due Oct. 1!

The University of Maryland’s Education Abroad Office is thrilled to announce a new scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students studying abroad on a University of Maryland exchange program.  UMD has 86 semester or year-long exchange programs with leading research universities worldwide.

Applicants will be awarded scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,500, depending on the location of the host University.  Priority is given to applicants to exchanges in the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.

Additional funds may be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need.

*Eligibility & How to Apply *

To be considered for a spring 2014 scholarship, students must submit a completed application to a UMD Exchange program and the Education Abroad Scholarship Application  by October 1st.

Students who wish to be considered for need-based aid must also file a FAFSA. Awards are contingent on applicant’s acceptance and confirmation into a UMD Exchange program.  Students currently receiving tuition remission or full-tuition scholarships are not eligible to apply.

Exchange is already one of the most affordable types of study abroad, as students pay only their regular tuition. With this scholarship, study abroad becomes even more accessible. Exchange is also one of the most valuable forms of study abroad. Students will study at some of the best universities in the world, with extraordinary students and faculty, be completely immersed in the host culture, and have opportunities to develop early career networks.

You're Invited! SEC Nicaragua Symposium - October 10th at 7pm

You’re invited to the Maryland Social Entrepreneurship Corps (SEC) Symposium and reception on Thursday, October 10 from 7:00-9:00 pm in McKeldin Library room 6137 (6th floor). Eleven undergraduate students, led by Dr. Susan White, Distinguished Tyser Teaching Fellow of Finance, traveled to Nicaragua during summer 2013 as part of a new University of Maryland study abroad program that combines entrepreneurship with service learning. The students worked and lived in rural areas helping develop and promote small businesses that provide essential products at affordable prices, including eyeglasses, energy efficient stoves, and water filters.

The students will present their experiences, ranging from the types of consulting they delivered, to the clients with whom they worked, to the homestay environments. The experience was managed by Social Entrepreneur Corps (SEC), an organization founded in 2005 to promote entrepreneurial solutions to economic challenges. The Maryland Social Entrepreneur Corps was launched by the Office of International Affairs and Education Abroad in collaboration with the Honors College, the Smith School, and the Center for Social Value Creation.

The Office of International Affairs, the Davis Foundation, the Honors College, and The Levy-Woolston Fund for Study Abroad also provided financial support to participating students.

Please RSVP to ogi@rhsmith.umd.edu by Friday, October 4 to reserve your seat. A reception with hors d’ oeuvres will be held from 8:30-9:00 following the students’ presentations.

We look forward to seeing you on October 10 to hear about the incredible experience these UMD students had in Nicaragua this summer!

APT: Company Info Session TODAY in Stamp Student Union

Dear Student:

Please join Applied Predictive Technologies (APT) for a Company Information Session TODAY, September 24th at 6:30 pm in Stamp Student Union (Pyon Su/Rm 2108). Food will be served! Until then, here’s a bit more about APT...

REVOLUTIONIZING “BIG DATA” ANALYTICS

Applied Predictive Technologies (APT) is the world’s largest purely cloud-based predictive analytics software company. APT’s Test & Learn software is revolutionizing the way Global 2000 companies harness their Big Data to accurately measure the profit impact of pricing, marketing, merchandising, operations, and capital initiatives, tailoring investments in these areas to maximize ROI. APT’s client portfolio includes Walmart, Starbucks, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Walgreens, CVS, Subway, Victoria’s Secret, Hilton, and many others. APT was founded in 1999 and funded in 2006 by Accel-KKR. In June 2013, APT received a $100 million investment from Goldman Sachs.

WHAT DOES APT DO?

APT’s software helps senior executives of consumer-facing organizations make investment decisions that can drive millions of dollars in increased profits.  Numerous Fortune 500 companies use APT’s software to build their key strategies and guide corporate decisions including:

     - We’re considering investing hundreds of millions of dollars in rolling out the “store of the future” across our chain – what impact will our investment have on store sales?

     - A supermodel / sports celebrity endorsement costs us tens of millions of dollars per year – is it worth it for us to continue the endorsement?

     - We’ve got a new menu item that we believe will rapidly grow in popularity into being a signature dish. Should we promote this concept in a snack size on our dollar menu or in a full size as part of a combo meal?

     - Do sponsored ads alongside Google search results drive off-line sales in brick-and-mortar stores?

Matthew Guay (mguay@math.umd.edu)
The Maryland Mathematical Modeling Contest (M3C) is a new intramural competition, organized by the University of Maryland Mathematics and AMSC departments, based on the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). The M3C is aimed at students in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, and operations research with an interest in the modeling techniques that pervade all of these disciplines.

Over the course of four days, use mathematical, programming and research skills in teams of three to solve a complex open-ended problem and write a paper detailing your model and solution. Problems like:
  • Developing efficient water usage strategies for nations facing water stress.
  • Charting the spread of invasive beetle species and analyzing containment policies
  • Developing traffic flow models for traffic circle design
Winners will receive prizes and the chance to compete in the international MCM in February!

Come to the M3C information session on Wednesday, 9/25 at 4:45PM. Held in room 3206 in the Mathematics Building (building code MTH), we'll explain the structure of the competition and the schedule for our modelling tutorial sessions, and yes, there will be food!

Department of Economics - Research Fellows Program Fall 2013

The Research Fellows Program is an opportunity for undergraduate students to gain experience applying economic knowledge to the production of market research valued by businesses. The program constitutes a “practice internship” - students can stay on campus but still get the opportunity to engage in research activity that they might do as an intern or an entry level employee working at a consulting firm. Entry into the program is competitive; only eight or nine students will be selected to participate in this inaugural version of the program. Students will work in small groups (2-3 per group) to gather macroeconomic and industry-specific data and other qualitative information, analyze that data and interpret the detailed information, and use findings to develop specific recommendations for simulated clients. Specific research topics may include accounts receivable management, revenue cycle management, and client relationship management. In addition to exploring a career option appropriate for economics majors, students who succeed in the program will get an enthusiastic letter of recommendation from a respected business executive and be well-positioned to draw on a network of business contacts.

To create and present this opportunity, the Department of Economics has partnered with Kaulkin Ginsberg, a leading local firm providing consulting services to other businesses, particularly on mergers and acquisitions in specific sectors of the economy. Mr. Mike Ginsberg, president and CEO, will supervise the students in conjunction with Dr. Cindy Clement, Director of Undergraduate Studies for the department. The Economics Association of Maryland (EAM) is also helping to run the program. Students with questions about the program should contact Dr. Clement via email: clement@econ.umd.edu

Minimum qualifications for participation in the Research Fellows Program include:

· cumulative GPA at the University of Maryland of at least 3.25
· successful completion of ECON325 and ECON326
· coursework or other experience using Excel or Access or similar software
· intention to graduate after December 2013
· availability to meet on campus Monday evenings 5:30 to 7:30
