On Tuesday, November
19th, the Department of Economics will be hosting an information session for
sophomores and juniors who might be interested in applying to the department's
honors program. The session will take place from 6:30-7:00 p.m. in
Tydings 4103.
The session will include
brief presentations by:
Dr. John Straub,
Director of the Economics Department Honors Program, and by
Shefali Khanna (UMD
class of 2012), a recent graduate of the department's honors program.
Students admitted to the
program pursue faculty-mentored research projects during their senior year.
The independent research projects culminate with a senior honors thesis.
Students who successfully complete the program earn 6 credits (ECON 396
and ECON 397), and the distinction of departmental honors on their transcript.
Pursuing self-directed independent research with a faculty mentor is a
valuable experience for anyone considering graduate studies in economics, and a
strong positive signal to potential employers.
