Job Opportunities at the SEC

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Washington, DC is seeking applicants for multiple positions in the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA). Candidates should have a BA/BS or higher degree in Economics or Accounting. Expertise in applied microeconomics fields such as finance, industrial organization, public policy, and labor is a plus. We seek individuals with a track record of creative thinking, strong empirical research abilities, team work, and excellent communication skills. Interest in finance, securities markets and public policy is essential given our mission. In all roles, candidates must demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge of economics and econometrics in support of the SEC's mission to protect investors, facilitate capital formation, and ensure fair and orderly markets. Please note: Non-Citizens holding only a visa authorizing admission to the U.S. are not eligible for this position.


We are recruiting for two different types of positions: Economist and SEC Fellow (Economist). We encourage all candidates to apply for both of positions. See below:

1. Financial Economist: Candidate duties may include providing research, analysis, and advice to DERA and SEC staff and building economic models, determining empirical methodology, organizing data collection, and summarizing studies in formal and informal presentations. 2. SEC Fellow (Economist): Candidate duties may include providing economic guidance and research expertise to a broad range of activities, including rulemakings, enforcement actions, market risk assessments, and other regulatory initiatives. In all roles, candidates must demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge of economics and econometrics in support of the SEC's mission to protect investors, facilitate capital formation, and ensure fair and orderly markets.

Open & closing dates: 11/17/2023 to 03/29/2024

Successful applicants are usually hired on an initial two-year (temporary) appointment that may be extended for up to an additional two years at the agency's discretion and, if extended, the total Fellow position cannot exceed four years. During their appointment Financial Economist Fellows are not precluded from competing for permanent openings.
