Interested in helping students learn math
or science? Considering a career in K-12 education? The UMD Noyce
Scholars Program can pay you to “dip your toes” into education or to enter a
teacher certification program. Here are several opportunities available
during the 2013-2014 school year:
·
Tutoring: Freshmen and sophomores with strong
math or science backgrounds can work with students in local middle or high
schools. You will earn $15 an hour, and most school sites can be accessed
via the UMD shuttle system. Tutors also get paid to attend a monthly
seminar to learn tutoring strategies and share experiences and may attend other
Noyce Scholars’ activities. We will be looking for approximately 15 math
tutors and 10 science tutors.
·
Summer internships: Rising sophomores and juniors can apply
for paid education-related internships in the summer of 2014. You will
receive $2,700 for working six weeks over the summer and can choose from a
variety of sites (or craft your own experience!). Previous interns have
worked at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Library
of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, and with other groups both on
and off campus.
·
Teacher certification
scholarships – Noyce Scholars:
Noyce Scholars receive $14,000 a year while enrolled in an undergraduate
teacher certification program in math or science and continued
mentoring/training once they graduate and begin teaching. For each year
of scholarship support, Noyce Scholars are expected to teach for two years in
any high-needs school district in the United States (in Maryland, for example,
this would include Baltimore County, Montgomery County, Prince George’s County,
etc.).
