The deadline to apply for the UMD Masters in Applied Economics Spring 2014 cohort has been extended to January 1st.

This program is ideal for our undergraduates who are looking to gain applied quantitative analysis and econometric modeling skills. Our program is particularly relevant for those of you interested in policy analyst positions. This program can be completed in as few as 15 months, and classes are held in the evening at our DC location: 1400 16th Street NW, near Dupont Circle.

Our courses are taught by an extremely talented group of professional economists, many of whom are currently employed by the US government in departments as diverse as the Environmental Protection Agency, the Treasury, and the USDA. As a student in our program, you will have the chance to learn directly from professionals in the field, who know exactly what it takes to succeed as an economist. The program is continuously growing, and we are always adding new events, opportunities, and courses.

Economics Honors Program - Information Session Tues. Nov. 19th

On Tuesday, November 19th, the Department of Economics will be hosting an information session for sophomores and juniors who might be interested in applying to the department's honors program.  The session will take place from 6:30-7:00 p.m. in Tydings 4103.

The session will include brief presentations by:

Dr. John Straub, Director of the Economics Department Honors Program, and by
Shefali Khanna (UMD class of 2012), a recent graduate of the department's honors program.

Students admitted to the program pursue faculty-mentored research projects during their senior year.  The independent research projects culminate with a senior honors thesis.  Students who successfully complete the program earn 6 credits (ECON 396 and ECON 397), and the distinction of departmental honors on their transcript.  Pursuing self-directed independent research with a faculty mentor is a valuable experience for anyone considering graduate studies in economics, and a strong positive signal to potential employers.

Complete details related to the Economics Department Honors Program are posted online at:
http://www.econ.umd.edu/undergraduate/honors

The meeting on November 19th will be an opportunity to speak in person with the program's director and a recent graduate of the program.

Light refreshments will be served.

AASD Brown Bag with Dr. Odis Johnson Jr.

The African American Studies Department  invite you to attend the following:

Great Equalizers or Conduits of Neighborhood Social Disorganization? A Counterfactual  Analysis of Year-Round and Traditional-Year Schooling.

AASD Brown Bag with Dr. Odis Johnson Jr.

The social function of schooling in the U.S. is an unsettled issue. Persistent racial, SES and residential disparities in test-scores suggest schools fall short in serving as society’s great equalizers. Despite seemingly intractable educational differences, research has produced evidence that schools function to reduce racial gaps in test-scores. However, these studies rarely consider the qualities of children’s neighborhoods as contributors to educational stratification, or use counterfactual modeling to strengthen causal inferences.  Conversely, Dr. Odis Johnson’s study concludes that schools may be greater equalizers according to race than previously thought, but simultaneously serve as conduits of neighborhood social disorganization’s relatively large stratifying effects.

Date: Wednesday, November 20, 2013
Location: 1126 Taliaferro Hall
College Park, MD 20742
Time: noon-1:00pm

Not much assistance is given to business-intended students. Our goal with this seminar is to give students an idea of what to expect aside from the statistics and requirements given by the LEP office’s program. We aim to give you a head start on building a competitive application, and help you get involved with programs that you might not know that you're allowed to join. In this hour-long session, we will cover:
  • A basic overview of the actual application.
  • The resumes and cover letters that some of us had used in our applications this past Spring.
  • Discuss getting bullet points that make a standout applicant.
  • Talk about backup plans for students that aren't accepted.
  • Meet one on one with a current business school student.*

*For students to take full advantage of this offering, please print out and bring a recent copy of your resume.

We are not affiliated with the LEP office or the application judging process but just want to provide some guidance. Please send any questions to TheoMichalik@yahoo.com
