Research Assistant Position with the Economic Policy Institute

The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) has an immediate opening for at least one research assistant. This exciting position will support the research and writing of economists and policy analysts at EPI. The person(s) hired will work in one or more of the following issue areas: labor market analysis (including wages, employment, and unemployment), health care, education, retirement security, international economics, the federal budget or EPI’s program on race, ethnicity and the economy. The experts at EPI examine each of these issues through a “living standards” lens by analyzing the impact of economic trends and policies on low and moderate-income American households.

The successful candidate will have a BA in economics, math, or other related social science field (e.g., public policy or political science) and will also have strong quantitative skills. The RA is required to be a highly organized and detail-oriented researcher with the ability to gather, analyze, and present a wide variety of economic data. The RA needs to be able to present findings through tables, figures, and literature reviews and needs to meticulously document the work. The RA will also assist in the publications process of reports, issue briefs, blog posts, etc. This position requires strong Excel expertise, including the creation of graphics. It also requires a strong familiarity with some basic economic data concepts, like how to deflate nominal income or wage data to account for inflation. The RA should also have strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work well on a team. Work experience as a research assistant or in a similar position is strongly preferred. Familiarity with labor market and micro survey data and/or experience analyzing data using SAS or STATA are also strongly desired.

This is a full-time position that offers an excellent benefits package, and a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position also offers excellent opportunities for on-the-job training – for example, EPI RAs receive extensive training to use WordPress. To apply, send cover letter, resume and a list of three references to Researchjob@epi.org. No phone calls please. The cover letter should state when the applicant will be available to start work. Applications will be reviewed as received until the position is filled.
