Sign up for an actuarial exam!
Actuaries get their credentials by taking a series of
exams administered by the Society of Actuaries (SOA). It's getting more and more
competitive to get a job as an actuarial analyst or intern, and a great way to
set yourself apart from the crowd is to take (and hopefully pass!) an actuarial
exam. In addition to taking standardized exams, actuarial students also must get
credit for certain topics through Validation by Educational Experience (VEE),
which can be obtained through college courses.
Here is a link to a page on the beanactuary.org website
that describes the actuarial exam process. On this page, there is a link to exam
application forms.
What preliminary actuarial exams can I take? Exam P covers
Probability and Statistics. It is now offered five times a year in September,
November, January, March and May. Exam FM covers Interest Theory. It is offered
three times a year, in December, February, and June. For more information, go to
http://www.beanactuary.org/exams/exam_sched.cfm.
What VEE credit can I get for my college courses? Through
Validation by Educational Experience (VEE), you can get SOA credit for the
following topics: Applied Statistical Methods, Corporate Finance, and Economics.
The easiest way to receive credit is by taking college courses while still in
school. For a directory of courses that are already approved for VEE credit, go
to http://www.soa.org/ccm/content/exams-education-jobs/education-redesign/process-for-validation-by-educational-experience/
