I would like to extend an invite all students (irrespective of major) to join UMD's Actuarial Club for its first meeting this Thursday, Sept. 28th at 6pm in the Kirwan Building (Math Building) room 1311.
I'm guessing the first question many people having regarding this club is what is an Actuary. Actuarial science (as the field is called) is the discipline that applies rigorous mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in insurance, pension, finance, investment and other industries and professions.
The ultimate goal is to price these various insurance products optimally. The three fields that make up Actuarial Science are statistics, finance/economics, and programming (If you have an interest in any one of this fields, I highly encourage you to try this club out!)
The purpose of this club is to foster and encourage the study of the Actuarial field. Chances are, you are mostly likely not really sure about this career and really just want to explore it a bit more. Well, you are at the right place.
In this club, we will do activities ranging from exam preparation, R coding practice, & professional lectures (from academia & industry) all designed to help you decide whether or not the field is a viable career path for you. Mostly, the meetings/ lectures will happen on a weekday evening.
Most communication regarding the club will be posted on our discord server. Here is the link to join: https://discord.gg/nqQAey8N.
We will also try to communicate more club details to the Actuarial Listserv this semester. (If you'd like to join the Listserv, please email Professor Eric Slud at slud@umd.edu).
But for the most part, discord is a much easier method of communication for me, so please do join that!
Hope to have a great fall semester with all of you! If you have any questions, feel free to DM me on discord.
Thanks,
Jerome Mathew (President of the Actuarial Club)
